Firefox logoIf you use Mozilla’s

browser, chances are you know about all the zillions of “add-ons” they offer, which you can use to tailor the browser to your online needs, from real-time weather reports to customized searches. Now Firefox has teamed with Ebay, creating an add-on that informs you—also in real-time—about your current bids,  items being sold, and most importantly, when you’ve been outbid. Never blow a coveted auction again, say for a certain Walt Disney lunch box from our cherished childhood. Interested?

Dine With Gene and Shannon

  Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed

Who could resist a chance to hobnob with Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed? A plane ride for you and three guests will whisk you away to LA where you briefly get to be a part of the Simmons’ Family Jewels, metaphorically speaking. Have dinner with the rock star and the model, spend the night in luxury hotel accommodations, and know that you are helping out a worthy cause. The bidding is presently set at $15,201.09. All proceeds from the eBay auction, which commences April 4, will be donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatrics AIDS Foundation.

Voyager Flat Available to Affluent Trekkers

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Household, Misc. Tech

Starship Voyager Flat

Tony Alleyne designed a Star Trek-themed apartment based on the Starship Enterprise. After spending more than £30,000 (~US $58,000.00) to build it in England, he decided to sell it for £1.25 million (~$2.5 million). With no interest from bidders, he then upgraded it to a Voyager and changed the price to £500,000 (~$969,000.00.) Apparently the poor guy is still having no luck in finding a buyer, so if you are an eBay master you might want to handle the sale for him. Then again, if you are an conniving Trekker, maybe you can just trade for your transporter credits.

Wesleyan University Offers Scholarship on eBay

Wesleyan University

Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Oklahoma has put up a scholarship for bid on eBay. Worth approximately $23,000, the package includes tuition, room, and board for an entire school year. Designed to create publicity for the college, bidding is available until February 11th. Last time we checked, the latest bid (one of 23) was for $16,100. Good for Wesleyan, and kudos to the highest bidder for being smart enough to know that there is more than one way to get into college.

eBay Removes All Virtual Item Listings

eBay LogoBad news for Gold Farmers and MMO junkies looking to make their fortunes virtually - eBay, the world’s largest auction house, has begun quietly closing all listings for virtual property including “currency, items, and accounts/characters”. This is all according to poster on Slashdot who talked with a representative from eBay and got the following explanation:

The policy on digitally delivered goods states: “The seller must be the owner of the underlying intellectual property, or authorized to distribute it by the intellectual property owner.” Given the nebulous nature of ownership in online games, eBay has decided the prudent decision is to remove the possibility for players to sell what might be the IP of other parties via their service.

Of course, we doubt that this will put an end to payment for virtual online property - I’m expecting to see WoWbay.com to get bought out any day now…

PS3 Sells for $9.99 on eBay

One CHEAP PS3

If you’re planning to make lots of money by hawking your launch-day PS3 on eBay, please please make sure that you know how to use eBay. Some poor sucker (who obviously spent a lot of time out in the cold to get it), accidentally just sold his brand-new, unopened PS3 for the grand total of $9.99 + $50.00 S&H. This year’s “Worst Use of the ‘Buy It Now’ Button Award” goes to this hapless auctioneer

It’ll be interesting to see whether the winning bidder ever gets his - my guess is that this’ll just end up in one negative feedback point for the seller, and no $10.00 PS3 changing hands.

Playstation 3 Weekend Recap

Playstation 3 FrontThe Playstation 3 finally launched in the United States on Friday and gamers and scalpers were finally able to get their hands on the hardware. The limited supply of consoles meant that demand was driven to frenzied levels, surpassing the madness of last year’s Xbox 360 launch. One thing seems clear, though; it seems like very few retailers learned their lesson last year, and a confluence of events led this launch to be worse in many ways.

More after the jump.

Average Profit for PS3 eBay Auctioneers? $2,000 +

PS3 LineOh sure, we may have laughed at those poor bastards waiting in the cold for Sony’s latest - cold, hungry, sheltered from the elements only by their tents and the overhang of the Wal-Mart’s entrance. But they’re the ones laughing now - turns out, via a recent study, that the average price of a pre-sold PS3 auctioned on eBay was hovering around $2600. In recent weeks, the price has dropped to around $2000, but there obviously are still a lot of rich, impatient gamers out there looking to get their hands on this console ASAP.

So maybe it WAS worth it to quit your job and wait in line for a week - I know I don’t make $2,000 in that amount of time. Congratulations Mr. Waiting Out In the Cold for Electronics Guy… this Bud’s for you.

Most Japanese PS3s Headed To Secondary Markets

Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: PlayStation 3

Playstation 3 Given the small amount of Playstation 3 consoles allocated for the Japanese launch, it should come as no surprise that most of these consoles are headed to secondary markets like online auction sites, import game dealers, and as “used” consoles. However, the latest Enterbrain sales figures are the biggest indication of how many of the consoles are not going to be played right away. According to a report on GamesIndustry, less than one game per console is being sold; the tie ratio is a low 0.98. While mega bundles and forced tying generally push up game tie rates in the United States, it appears that very little of that is happening in Japan.

Let the PS3 Price Gouging Begin!

PS3 Ebay Screenshot

We all knew it was coming eventually… with a limited supply of only 400,000 units in the States, it was only a question of when Mr. Supply would meet Mr. Demand and chaos would ensue.

Today, EB / Gamestop began taking pre-orders for the hulking, wallet-emptying console via a $100 deposit system. But with only an average of 6 consoles allocated per store, only the first few lucky customers in line will have the privelege of giving Gamestop $100 for a piece of paper that *might* get you a console at launch. Unless, of course, the store employees got there first. Thanks to EB / Gamestop’s store policies, each store employee was able to reserve themselves one PS3 console before the public even had a chance at them.

So what do we get out of all this? Well, a day of exciting blogging, some preposterous eBay listings, and a sinking feeling in our bank accounts.
