Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,

VirusMcAfee has announced that a Koobface variant virus is hanging out on Facebook. The subject line message states, “You look just awesome in this new movie.” Open it and it tells you that your flash player is out of date and gives you a download site to update your player. Apparently the worm has been around since August but the variant is new.  Next time you are hanging out on Facebook, remember your flash player is just fine.

Zeebo Makes Its Way Into 3G Wireless Gaming

Tectoy Zeebo Game SystemThe Zeebo from Tectoy is aiming to make its way into the very difficult video game market.  The one advantage they have is they are using a 3G wireless network at no cost to the user.  The Zeebo is launching in July of 2009 in Brazil and will then branch out to other markets in developing countries.  The console will be always connected to a 3G network, allowing games and content download.  The system comes with 3 games pre-loaded, Action Hero 3D, Evil Prey, and Quake.  Although not the greatest titles of today, they obviously are not competing with the traditional market, but the $258 price tag certainly does.  The games will cost between $10 and $30, but there is no note of supporting developers or any other titles in the works.  The Zeebo features an ARM 528MHz CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 130 graphics, 1GB NAND flash memory, 160MB RAM, 128MB DDR SDRAM and 32MB stacked DDR SDRAM.  The 3G wireless portion of the Zeebo would be a great concept to see in the U.S on the next generation of consoles if only the carriers would allow it, but we doubt it.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Internet,

Firefox logoThe word is out that Mozilla has officially set a record for the most downloads in a 24 hour period. The official number is 8,002,530 copies of Firefox 3 downloads.

“As the arbiter and recorder of the world’s amazing facts, Guinness World Records is pleased to add Mozilla’s achievement to our archives,” Gareth Deaves, Guinness’ records manager, said.

Microsoft has about 74% of the world market share for browsers while Firefox accounts for about 18%. We realize that this was conceived as a publicity stunt, but now that XP is retired, we expect that number will go up.

CastgrabberDownload podcasts without a PC with the Castgrabber. Get yourself a network, plug in your iPod, Zune, or other MP3 player via USB cable. The device magically and automatically downloads. We are not sure exactly how that happens although the company says that it is similar to TiVo and that installation is simple when you select through iTunes software or any other Net sites of your choice. It also acts as a recharging dock while it does its thing. We found the Castgrabber at the online  Home Depot for $119.95.

Should the Record Industry Offer Free Music?

Music Glue logoAn interesting meeting took place during the Song Summit Sydney (S3) in Australia. Mark Meharry, co-founder of Music Glue, said that consumers are changing and that the record industry will have to respond to the fact that there is now much more file sharing as opposed to purchase. He says that downloaders are music fans, not thieves.

Considering the fact that the current generation can get what they want without spending a dime, Meharry suggests they let the music be free and concentrate on other products available, such as music players or concert tickets. Some of the bands listed on Music Glue, which was started about a year ago, offers free downloads in exchange for an e-mail addy or small donation. We like the idea but suspect that this is a debate that will not end for quite a while.

To alleviate all the wasted time spent searching, and are offering fans of the show an easier way to keep up with the series.  They are now making every single episode of the program available on one site.  And for free!  In a joint statement, the duo said: “We got really sick of having to download our own show illegally all the time, so we gave ourselves a legal alternative.”

Although the shows are currently running ad free, expect that to change sometime in the near future.  Current episodes can also be found on the site though they will experience a short blackout period.
