Katherine Heigl Donates $1 Million to Animals

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Charity, Kind Acts,

Katherine Heigl and her dog has donated $1 million to help animals in Los Angeles.

The Killers actress has pledged the enormous sum to the city as part of a new initiative to get animals spayed and neutered in honor of her late brother Jason Heigl - who died in a car accident in 1986 when he was a high school student.

“I said to my mother, ‘I think it’s a really grace-filled way to honor him.’ My mother began the foundation in his name as a way of creating a legacy for this child of hers that didn’t live long enough to do that himself and he also happened to be a real advocate for animals and children and the repressed so it works out beautifully. It’ll never change how this day feels to us come September 23 every year. It has a significance now, of beauty, a grace to it, that we are grateful for.”

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation aims to stop the pet population crisis in the area with neutering schemes, but also through its support of training and obedience programs, rescue organisations, ‘no kill shelters,’ pet adoption schemes and programs which help move homeless animals away from shelters which intend to put them down.

Quote of the Day: Jay-Z Didn’t Want We Are the World Remake

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Collaborations, Gossip, Covers,

“I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: , I love it, and I understand the point and think it’s great. But I think ‘We Are the World’ is like [Michael Jackson’s] ‘Thriller’ to me. I don’t ever wanna see it touched. I’m a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that’s going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: [Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but ‘We are the World’ is [musically] untouchable like ‘Thriller’ is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it’s gonna be untouchable.”

Just leave a comment telling us how much you donated, and we will take care of the rest. We are currently matching donations 14 times.

Over the past couple of days, while trying to carry on with “business as usual,” I’ve personally found it hard to focus on tech, gadgets, and all of the goodness that we have yet to bring you, as the world is focused on the disastrous aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. We’re sure you’ve seen the imagery, but if you haven’t, or if you aren’t quite sure, I encourage you to watch this AP report:

Gear Live & Friends Will Match Your Haiti SMS Donations!
We felt it was time to do our part to help, so with the support of a bunch of Gear Live friends, we are announcing that we will match SMS donations made by Gear Live readers and viewers. George Clooney Leading Haiti Telethon

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, ABC, CBS, HBO, MTV, NBC, News,

George ClooneyWhen there’s a disaster of epic proportions, we can usually count on three things: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will donate a large chunk of change to the cause, Anderson Cooper will make his way to the middle of the tragedy, and George Clooney will rally the troops for a fundraiser.

To help those devastated by the earthquake in Haiti, the Up in the Air star has already immersed himself in plans for a possible celebrity-filled .

The event - which will reportedly air on MTV, HBO and CBS - is tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 22.

ABC, NBC, CNN may also participate and televise the broadcast.

Jeff Gallen, the same who man produced the 9/11 fundraiser Clooney worked on (America: A Tribute to Heroes), will be involved with this project, as well.

Romeo Tweets for Animal Rescue

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,

RomeoRomeo, a white and ginger cat, has its own Twitter following. In less than three months, he has managed to gather more than $5,000.00 in funds for animal rescue groups. Caroline Golon created the account for her 5 year-old Persian, who is himself a rescue cat. He had hearing issues and had to go through several surgeries, resulting in one limp ear. Still, we are glad to hear that Twitter can be used this way and that two national companies not only back him but contribute to the causes he purrs

Gnomedex 8.0: Using social media for good causes with Beth Kanter

Beth Kanter is a technology trainer for non-profit organizations. Online, she blogs at Beth’s Blog. She experiments with all types of social media tools. Things like Facebook, FriendFeed, Flickr, Qik, etc.

Today Beth is going to talk about how she has raised money to support disadvantaged children in Cambodia.

  1. Make it Personal - When you talk about your cause, you make it very personal. Beth has adopted two children from Cambodia. However, there are kids in Cambodia who don’t have adoptive parents, and some are even considered the head of their household, due to not having parents.
  2. Stories - Tell stories about the kids and the impact that the foundation she was working with was having on the children. Also share stories about what she learned doing the work, as it was unfolding.
  3. Three Rs of Network Weaving- Relationship building, Rewards, and Reciprocity. Putting that into action, Beth told stories about the t-shirts that she was able to get as part of her fundraising efforts. She blogged about the issues, and she continued interweaving those relationships that she was building.
  4. Fun, Humor, Easy, Passion
  5. - Beth’s birthday was during the campaign, and she used Facebook to ask her friends to donate $10 to the cause. She also made a series of videos with her kids to attempt to solicit her network. That got others to solicit their networks.
  6. In the middle of the campaign, Beth just continued blogging and sharing about the campaign using the different networks and tools at her disposal. She tried to focus on people that had larger networks, counting on the compounding effect.

Beth than put out a challenge - can we get 250 people to donate $10 to send someone to college? I have sent the link out to my Twitter network, and I am putting it here now. If you have $10 (or $5, or even $1) to help someone less fortunate than you, please go here: Beth Kanter’s call to action

Actors Donate Paychecks to Heath Ledger’s Daughter

Heath Ledger and MatildaBack in February, it was announced that Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell would all be chipping in to complete Heath Ledger’s final project. Now we’re learning the trio had more than their fellow thespian in mind when they agreed to help. They were also thinking of Ledger’s daughter, Matilda.

Heath, who died of an accidental overdose back in January, had been working on at the time of his passing. Although it was feared the magical movie would have to be scrapped, director Terry Gilliam was able to have other actors play different versions of Tim, Ledger’s character.

According to Gilliam, the generosity of the fill-ins extended beyond the film’s set. Out of concern for 2-year-old Matilda, the three fathers donated their paychecks to young girl.
