LG 55-inch OLED HDTV priced at $7,900, coming this May
Posted by Andrey Malskiy Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment,
LG is ready to launch its first OLED HDTV in May during the Cannes film festival. The television set, which we first saw at CES, is priced at 9 million Won, or about $7,900, so this is definitely a premium product not meant for the masses. The company originally planned to launch the OLED TV during the London Olympics, but has expedited production in order to be the first one on the market with an OLED set at retail. Upon consumer reactions, LG will either continue its investment in the OLED market, or reexamine its direction. The internal review is said to take place in July.

Will the iPad HD feature haptic feedback that lets you “feel” displayed objects?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Displays, Handhelds, Rumors,
There's a little company out there called Senseg that makes tactile displays using an electrostatic field to simulate the feeling of friction and different textures right on the touchscreen, and the last-minute rumor of the day is that the technology might be the big secret feature of the iPad HD. The folks over at Pocket-link spoke with a Senseg rep, and were told that the company wouldn't be making any statements until "after Apple's announcement." Kind of odd and interesting. Either the person knowns they need to keep their mouth shut, or there's really nothing there and they just want a little publicity. However, in mid-2011 it was reported that Senseg was partnering with "a certain tablet maker based in Cupertino," and Apple's invitation for today's event does read "We have something you really have to see. And touch." Is that a vague clue? We'll know in under an hour.

iPad 3 will feature a 2048x1536 Retina display
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, HDTV, Rumors,
If you were curious if the iPad 3 would ship with a Retina display after all the rumors, well, wonder no more. MacRumors has independently confirmed that the panels that are to be used in the next iPad sport twice the linear resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2, sporting four times as many pixels. The site obtained one of the new panels and put it under a microscope in order to check out the pixel density. The results show that the pixels in the newer display panel are a quarter of the size of the pixels found in previous models.
MacRumors does note that the panels are not directly from Apple, however, they are listed as OEM replacement displays for the iPad 3 and are in mass production. The difficulty in creating 9.7" display panels with a 2048x1536 resolution make this all but obvious that these are for the next iPad.

Corning Lotus Glass to bring low power high-resolution displays
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Displays, PC / Laptop,
The company behind super-strong Gorilla Glass is stepping up display technology again. Corning on Tuesday announced Lotus Glass, a new material to be used in LCD and OLED screens.
Corning said in a press release that Lotus Glass offers a high-resolution display without slurping up too much power.
“Corning Lotus Glass has a high annealing point that delivers the thermal and dimensional stability our customers require to produce high-performance displays,” Andrew Filson, global commercial director of Display Technologies and vice president of Corning, said in a statement. “Because of its intrinsic stability, it can withstand the thermal cycles of customer processing better than conventional LCD glass substrates. This enables tighter design rules in advanced backplanes for higher resolution and faster response time.”
Ars Technica explained that “LCD glass substrates can require intense heating and cooling cycles to create screens, particularly for higher-resolution displays.” However, Lotus Glass’ higher “annealing point” means the material must be placed under much higher temperatures in order to “relax internal stresses and forces,” the site said.

Apple having trouble with iPad 3 Retina Display
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Handhelds,
Apple released the iPad 2 last March without upgrading its display, and but a CNet report has said Apple is now facing challenges with bumping the screen of the iPad 3 up to Retina Display standards.
Apple would like its third-generation tablet to have a Retina Display, but CNet’s source said LG and Samsung, makers of Apple tablet panels, are having trouble packing the huge number of pixels necessary into a 10-inch screen.
Retina display, according to Apple’s definition, means the “display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.” The iPhone 4S features a Retina Display with a resolution of 960x620. Apple packed 326 pixels per inch (PPI) into the 3.5-inch screen to give graphics a super sharp, seamless look. It’s the most detail a human retina can see at a distance of 12 inches, Apple has said.
CNet noted that it’s not possible to cram that many pixels into the iPad 3. Display manufacturers like Samsung and LG have created displays with a maximum of 2,048x1,536 resolution, for 264 PPI, and at this point, that’s as high as they’ve been able to take the resolution of tablet’s screens. While that’s twice the 132 PPI on the iPad 2, it’s still not quite Retina Display quality.
