  • Dancing with the Stars (ABC, 8pm):  Will it come down to the Olympic gold medalist, NFL’s Man of the Year or the Chilean actor? Never underestimate a man who telenovela fans supporting him.
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30pm):  “Ted has an accident, and his close call with death finds him reevaluating his life and his relationship with Stella.” Yeah, I have no idea how he’s going to share her with either.

Spider Named After Neil Young

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Music, Science,

Trapdoor SpiderThis just proves it pays to be a rock star. We have already told you about asteroids that have been named after celebs. Jason Bond, an ECU biologist, discovered a new arachnid last year in Jefferson Co., Alaska. Although there are some rigid rules to follow, he managed to name the trapdoor spider Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi because he likes the man’s music and his work as an activist. This is not the first time that a creature has been named after a rocker. A whirligig beetle was named Orectochilus orbisonorum in honor of Roy.

Oprah: A Network of Her OWN?

Oprah WinfreyBig news today. You can hardly get on a Web site without seeing the banner headlines - , megastar and money-maker galore, is getting a TV network. And yet, the is already hers, no? And isn’t she somehow involved with the , too?

At any rate, the will be taken over by the star and become .  (Naturally, because the woman is well on her way to OWNing the world.)  As it is, Winfrey didn’t even pay for the Discovery channel network.  She instead turned over her Web site to the Discovery family and became chairman of the network. Not a bad deal.

Re-runs of her talk show will definitely be on the network, which will be all about Oprah all the time. Can’t wait.

XH G1 Tests in Space

Canon XH G1

This has to be worth megabucks in advertising. First introduced in November of 2006, the HX G1 camcorder was launched October 23 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The cam for professionals features a DIGIC DV II HD image processor, a 20x zoom lens, and a Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer, at shoots at 24 fps. After performing a number of tests, the XH was given the “a-ok.” Just as the Timex watch will be remembered as the watch that could go underwater, “take a licking, and keep on ticking,” the XH may be remembered as the cam that not only has been to space and keeps on filming, it carries a price tag of around $6,000.00.

Moon in my Room mini-moon nightlight

Posted by Jenny Lewis Categories: Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,

DescriptionHave a future astronaut at home?  Or maybe you just like the, um, “comfort” of a little extra moonlight in the room with you at night?  Check out Moon In My Room, a remote controlled nightlight with a detailed lunarscape that displays 12 phases of the moon.  The light sensor makes sure that there’s always a little moonlight around, and the three hanging angles make sure that your view is perfect.  Included with your purchase are lunar phase calendar and an audio CD with a lesson in moon-ology and space.  The lamp measures 10” in diameter and requires 4 AA and 2 AAA batteries (we’re guessing the AAAs are for the remote).

‘Man vs. Wild’ Returns in November

Bear GryllsLooks like that little snafu with Man vs. Wild’s had little fallout. If you’ve never seen the show on the , Grylls, a survivor expert, challenges various “wild” situations with only his skill to help him survive. Well, that and a helpful crew, it seems. He was found out a few months back when it was discovered that he was getting a little help on the survival series and that the scenarios he presented on the show were somewhat different in reality. Some reports said he stayed overnight in a motel when he was supposed to be braving the wild; another report said the folks on the show constructed a raft for him to use. Discovery continued to air the series, but edited it and offered a disclaimer that some of the show’s elements were staged. And now, he’s back for a second season of the reality series on November 9th at 9:00 p.m. He’ll also appear on a special called Bear’s Mission Everest at 10:00 p.m., where he’ll (attempt to) fly a paraglider in the Himalayas. In the upcoming season, he’ll visit the Sahara Desert, Panama and Patagonia. Discovery Channel president Jane Root commented, “We continue to seek out new exciting and daring adventures for Bear, and he continues to do what he does best. From an expedition documentary to hands-on demonstrations of life-saving tips for viewers, Bear Grylls brings out the adventurer in all of us.” This go-around, there will be no question about when the crew helps out… so Grylls should avoid any further media and fan criticism. See? He is a survival expert.
