Rolly Challenges Miuro to a Dance-a-Thon

It’s a sad state of affairs when a company creates a commercial with a human competing for a top dance spot with a robotic device. Remember Miuro? Sony has devised its own dancing bot to be released in the States sometime this spring. Palm-size, Rolly uses the reflection of the floor to create an acoustical image, with speakers at 180º angles. Considering how identically the two bots operate, it might be a better alternative to pit them against each other.

T-Groove Shirt

Nobody makes plain t-shirts anymore. T-Groove is the latest in apparel with a built-in power unit and sound sensor which reacts to both the beat and frequency of the tunes being played. Obviously designed for those that seek attention on the dance floor, it can also be a fine companion to those who don’t have a date. The shirt requires 4 AAA batteries (not included) and the pack is removable so you can wash out all that partying you did the night before. Made of 100% cotton, it is available in 3 sizes for £19.99 (~$39.70) at Electric Planet.

Keepon Digs the Beat

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Misc. Tech, Music, Science, Videos,

We don’t know how we managed to overlook this cute bot until we came across him on Wired. Keepon resides in Kyoto and generally works as a child-development research tool. This past summer his owners Hideki Kozima, a roboticist and child psychologist, and programmer Marek Michalowski introduced him to the rock band Spoon. The video “Keepon Dancing to Spoon’s ‘Don’t You Evah‘” was born. Kozima is his costar and we know that you will recognize several robotic cameos in the last shot. Spoon and Keepon will be the headliners at Wired’s NextFest which begins September 10.

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Specials, Cable,

HSM2I’m going to take a wild guess and say that most of the die-hard fans of have already seen the film a thousand times thanks to their DVR.  So every line, lyric and nuance have been dissected at this point.

But for those who just can’t get enough, will be airing a dance-along version of the movie next month.  So if you’ve been scratching your head trying to figure out some of those choreographed 8-counts, (along with the other cast members) will be on hand to help provide instruction for several of the musical’s numbers.

Be sure to set your Tivo now for September 8th.

Dancing With The Stars: Springer Moves On Thanks to Tucker’s Lack of Dancing

Dancing It was a tense nail-biter; who would leave the dance floor with their tail between their legs on the first installment of Dancing with the Stars? America voted and MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson was the first one booted from the show due to his two left feet and his lack of actual dancing. It was entertaining to watch, at best, if only to feel better about our own ability to at least bop to the beat rather than against it.

Judge Len Goodman said it best, ‘the problems started the moment Carlson stood up.’ I myself was rooting for Tucker because at least he was memorable, as well as under-dog Jerry Springer - lord knows I do not respect the man but he held his own and made me giggle at his endearing show on the dance floor. My bottom three would have been Harry Hamlin, Sara Evans, and Monique Coleman. These stars either had no personality shine through in their performances, or had too much of a “put-on” personality, (i.e. Monique Coleman.) When I decide to spend 2 hours of my precious time to watch amateur dancing, I want to be entertained and these three had the charisma of roadkill. Kind of harsh but it is nothing compared to some of the comments the judges had for a few of the stars.

I am anxious for the Latin segment of the routines, where the heat is turned up and you can really weed out the “have’s” from the “have-nots.” Mario Lopez should blow everyone away in this category as America got an eyeful of his moves this week. At the risk of sounding corny, he is one who’s Hips Don’t Lie. Vivica Fox brought some class to the group, for a 40-something woman, she has still got it. You go girl. Though I thoroughly enjoyed watching Mario Lopez shake his groove thang, I have to pick Emmitt Smith as my favorite. I found myself grinning like a Cheshire cat the whole time he was cha-cha-ing. You could see the joy in his eyes, and most of all…he had fun! That is what the show is all about.

Technically I would choose to crown Mario Lopez the winner by series end, but for showmanship and entertainment factor, definitely Emmitt Smith. Anyone who keeps me smiling for 1 whole minute and 1/2, deserves a sparkling disco ball trophy.

My Baby Outdances Benji From “So You Think You Can Dance”

Posted by Monica Edwards Categories: Alijah, Family, Personal,

AlijahI am such a proud mother. Alijah has got the Latino blood flowing through him-he is a dancing machine!! Anytime there is a beat on, his hips start swaying, his arms do their own jig and his face is aglow with joy. You would think that there is a master puppeteer at work, the way his body contorts in all those silly ways, but that is all him. He just loves to dance and he ain't gonna hide it, no sir. All the while we get to see a spectacular show and realize that this may be one of the great moments in time that we will have on record to blackmail him with when he hits his rebellious teenage years. The magic of video. Catch a glimpse for yourself as he outdances Benji, (my favorite), while watching So You Think You Can Dance. At the end of his dance he jabbers something in his own specific language, let me translate-- he says, "That was fun!" Trust me, you may be blown away by his superior dancing ability.
