MacBook Pro with Retina display price cut

Apple has announced an immediate price reduction on the entry-level 128 GB 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, slashing the price by $200 down to $1499. Additionally, for $1699 (the same price that the entry-level model used to be) you can now get the 256 GB version with a faster 2.6 GHz processor.

On the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro side of things, the $2,199 base model now features an upgraded 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor (up from a 2.3 GHz chip,) while the top-of-the-line $2,799 model now sports a 2.7 GHz i7 with 16 GB RAM.

As an aside, Apple has also dropped the price of the 13-inch MacBook Air with 256 GB storage--it now sells for $1,399, $100 less than it sold for previously.

Apple announces new, redesigned iMac

iMac Late 2012

During this morning's iPad mini event, Apple unveiled the brand new, redesigned iMac. The new model is super-thin, just 5mm thin at the edges, constructed using something called "friction stir welding" to fuse together the aluminum pieces. The display is laminated to the glass, similar to what you find on iOS devices. You get the same screen sizes, with the iMac coming in at 21.5-inch 1080p and 27-inch 2,560 x 1,400 models. Apple also announced a new Apple Fusion drive option, which is basically a hybrid drive that OS X manages for you. The OS and apps live on the flash storage portion, and all your documents and other apps get loaded onto the HDD portion. As you use and launch them, things get moved to the faster SSD portion on the fly.

The 21.5-inch model will ship in November for $1,299 with a 2.7GHz Core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, and with a 1TB hard drive. The 27-inch model starts at $1,799 for a 2.9GHz Core i5, and that one won't ship until December.

Apple releases new Mac mini with quad-core processors, USB 3.0

Mac mini late-2012 Core i5

Apple has just updated its most inexpensive Mac, the Mac mini. The updated model announced at today's iPad mini event sees spec bumps across the board. The new model sports Intel Ivy Bridge processors, either in dual-core or quad-core flavors, along with a Thunderbolt port, USB 3.0, OS X Mountain Lion pre-installed, AMD Radeon HD discreet graphics, and Bluetooth 4.0. Remember, despite being a desktop Mac, the Mac mini does not include a SuperDrive, so you'll have to count on the Mac App Store and downloads for installing apps. The Mac mini starts at $599 and comes with a dual-core 2.5GHz processor, 500GB storage, and 4GB RAM. For $200 more you get a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and a 1TB hard drive. Lastly, there's also a server version that ships with Mountain Lion Server for $999, and that one packs a quad-core 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 2TB storage and 4GB RAM. You can purchase the new Mac mini now from the Apple Store.

Apple also released the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display today at its iPad mini event.

Mac mini mid-2011 Sandy Bridge

If you're looking for an inexpensive Mac, the Mac mini is your answer, and Apple just released an updated model today alongside the release of OS X Lion. The new model sports Intel Sandy Bridge processors, either in the Core i5 or i7 flavor, along with a Thunderbolt port, Lion pre-installed, AMD Radeon HD discreet graphics, and Bluetooth 4.0. One thing that disappears from the Mac mini, though, is the SuperDrive. Instead, you'll have to rely on things like the Mac App Store for installing apps, and this shouldn't be too big a deal. The Mac mini starts at $599, and there's also a server version that ships with Lion Server for $999, and that one packs a Core i7 processor. You can purchase the new Mac mini now from the Apple Store.

Apple also released a refreshed MacBook Air today as well.

MacBook Air mid-2011

Yes, we know that the big excitement of the day is the release of Mac OS X Lion, but if you're more of a hardware person, you should know that Apple has released a refreshed MacBook Air this morning. The 13- and 11-inch notebooks now sport Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors, backlit keyboards, Thunderbolt ports (replacing the old Mini DisplayPort,) and ship with Mac OS X Lion installed.

Pricing starts at $999 for the 11.6-inch model, which gives you 64 GB SSD, 2 GB RAM, and a Core i5 1.6 GHz processor. For $1199, you get the 11.6-incher with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD. Both models offer five hours of battery life. Moving on to the 13-inch model, that starts at $1,299 and hits you with a 128 GB SSD, 4 GB RAM, and a 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor. Step it up to $1,599, and you get a 256 GB SSD instead, and the 13-inchers give you 7 hours of battery life. Everything else remains the same (which means the FaceTime cameras haven't been upgraded to HD) here, and they're available now on the Apple Store.

New Apple iMac brings Thunderbolt, next-gen quad-core processors

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, PC / Laptop,

iMac 2011 thunderbolt

Today, Apple announced updated iMac desktops with second-generation Intel Core processors and Thunderbolt interconnect technology. The new iMacs are available in the familiar 21.5-inch and larger 27-inch form factors, starting at $1,199 for the 21.5-inch model with an Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics, and a 500GB hard drive.

Thunderbolt is Apple's implementation of Intel's Lightpath interconnect technology, first seen on Apple's MacBook Pro laptops. As before, Thunderbolt on the iMac is compatible with USB, FireWire, and Gigabit Ethernet via adapters. Thunderbolt supports mini DisplayPort monitors without an adapter, and can support (via adapters) VGA, DVI, HDMI, and full-sized DisplayPort with an adapter. Thunderbolt has a theoretical 10Gbps throughput, so it can accommodate all of these interconnects simultaneously using only one port. The iMac 21.5-inch models come with one Thunderbolt port, while the 27-inch features two Thunderbolt ports.

On the software side, all new iMacs come with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, along with Apple's iLife '11 software (iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, GarageBand, etc.). New for the iMac line is the inclusion of FaceTime HD, which allows video chat with FaceTime equipped iPhone 4, iPod Touch, and iPad 2 devices.

All iMacs are EPEAT Gold certified and meet Energy Star 5.2 requirements. The iMac's LED backlit display is mercury free and Apple uses PVC free cables and components. The new iMacs use Apple's familiar aluminum and glass chassis, and come with a SD card slot, wireless keyboard, and a choice of Apple's Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

The new iMacs are available now through Apple Stores, store.apple.com, and authorized Apple Retailers. The base 21.5-inch iMac starts at $1,199 and $1,499, the base 27-inch iMac starts at $1,699 and $1,999. Configure to order options include high end Intel Core i7 processors, 2TB hard drives, 256GB SSD, additional system memory, and AppleCare.

If you're not looking for the latest and greatest, new iMacs also mean that there will be a ton of cheap iMacs hitting eBay.
