I-Mate working on Foleo competitor

While the Palm Foleo died on the vine, the concept may live on. I-Mate, makers of many fine Windows Mobile based smart phones is rumored to be working on a “shell” to go with their new Ultimate line. While the new shell would not contain any processor or memory of it’s own, it would feature a 1024x768 screen and a full sized keyboard to act as a dock for the smart phone. It is still unknown if the shell would feature batteries to increase runtime, but if it does that could be a killer feature for todays power-hungry HSDPA chipsets.
This seems like it would be a better approach than the Foleo. It would be cheaper, provide similar functionality, and allow a user to select which form factor they want (laptop vs. cellphone) at any given time as simply as clicking the phone into the larger frame. If this comes to market in a timely manner and offers a good user experience it could signal a new style of cellphone based computing—and a step into the “world of tomorrow”.

The Starbucks iTunes WiFi music store reviewed

As promised Apple and Starbucks started their rollout of the Starbucks WiFi Music Store in select cities. Gear Live is lucky enough to be in Seattle, the first city to get the special version of the iTunes Music Store in our Starbucks. The service allows laptops, iPhones, and the iPod Touch users to connect for free to the iTunes store while sipping lattes without having to pay for for a T-Mobile Hotspot account. Apples iTunes WiFi Music Store: trouble in paradise?

Yesterday morning brought Apple‘s iPhone Update version 1.1.1 which included a bevy of new features including the slick new WiFi music store for the iPod Touch and the iPhone. The WiFi music store lets users purchase songs on-the-go using any WiFi hotspot which essentially puts the entire multi-million track library of iTunes in your pocket - perfect for a quick impulse buy from time to time.
Unfortunately not all users are able to get the shiny new storefront to work. Several of the iPhone owning editors at Gear Live were able to update their iPhone and use the WiFi music store successfully - I was not. Worse yet I don’t appear to be alone as other users have reported similar problems on the internet. Click through the jump for full details on why the iTunes WiFi music store isn’t working for us.

Seagate DAVE: Digital Audio-Video Experience Wireless Hard Drive

In the latest episode of The ScobleShow, we got our first look at DAVE from Seagate. DAVE stands for “digital audio-video experience” and is a tiny 10 or 20 GB hard drive. Tiny as in 3.5 x 4.7 x .47-inches. The best part, though, is that this thing gives you the ability to share content by way of the built-in Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. So you can browse the devices with a cell phone, transfer content to other Bluetooth devices or DAVEs, and it has 10 hours of battery life. Expect it to retail for about $200 USD in May or June. CES 2007: Samsung Dual-Screen Ultra Music Phone SGH-F300 Announced

Samsung’s Ultra Music Phone, a union of slim style and function, is an iconic bar handset designed with an added twist: dual LCD screens. An LCD is featured on each side of the device. On one side there is a smaller LCD screen and the dialing keypad for making phone calls. This side also allows contact entry and cell phone menu functions. The reverse side has a large LCD screen and a dedicated touch sensitive pad and serves as the music player for MP3 and WMA files and has multimedia menu functions.
The Ultra Music is equipped with a digital power amp, which offers a dedicated music user interface that makes it easy to navigate through song lists. Additionally, it has a stereo FM radio and a Quick PC Sync, allowing users to create a music library and customized play lists. In addition to dedicated music features, the Ultra Music has all the extra features consumers have come to expect, including a 2 mega-pixel camera, extended battery life and Bluetooth technology. No pricing info has been announced yet, but we do have a picture of the other side of the phone, after the jump.
