This has to be the best commercial for a product since dropping a Timex in water and watching it keep on ticking. Andrew Cheatle lost his Nokia phone while at sea and he assumed it was gone forever. While shopping for a new one about a week later, his girlfriend claimed his number was calling hers. It turns out that fisherman Glen Kerley had caught a 25 lb., 4 ft. long cod, found the phone inside and, amazingly, it still worked after it dried out. Glen said that, “Cod are greedy fish — they’ll eat anything. They have big heads and big mouths.”

Nokia cell phone owners, take a look at the KIT Eco Charger. The device is so clever that it turns itself off automatically when your phone is fully charged. A spokesperson from the Carphone Warehouse claims that if everyone used one there would be a savings of about 300,000,000 kWh of electricity per year in the UK. Imagine what it would be worldwide. We think that’s a good start for £23 (~$33.00) and that KIT should expand their line with chargers for other phones.

GSMA and Mobile Groups to Design Universal Cell Phone Charger

Three cheers for the GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers. They have gotten together to create an industry-wide standard for a universal cell phone charger. The group’s UCS (universal charging solution) will have a micro-USB interface and should become available by 2010. The initial participants include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

Orange LG G910 Watch Phone

It’s Dick Tracy time with Orange’s touch watch/phone. Aside from its full touchscreen interface, the LG G910 has 3G HSDPA, video calling capabilities, a built-in MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity and comes with its own headset. Orange is part of France Telecom which has over 177 million customers and Europe will be the first to enjoy the wearable phone. No exact date or price was mentioned but after reading their press release, the company is undoubtedly going after the higher end customer.

LG displayed an eco-friendly cell phone at the 2009 Mobile World Congress this week with a solar panel that had been built in to the back cover. Only needing natural light, if given 10 minutes of direct sunlight, the user can make a 3 minute call. The best part of the gadget is that it can be put on any LG phone. The company also has redesigned their packaging with recycled paper for the box and printed material.

Samsung has unveiled their oval shaped BeatDJ phone with a touchscreen Symbian interface. It also features a 400x240 AMOLED display, Bang & Olufsen sound system with amp, a 3-megapixel camera, GPS and tri-band 3G with HSPA. But the best part of the cellie is its DJ scratch mode that turns the touchscreen into a virtual turntable with effects that can be saved. No date or price has yet to be announced. Samsung will also be offering a DISC phone with slide out number pad and Omnia HD, both of which also have Symbian interfaces.

HTC has two new upgrades. The 107.85 x 53.1 x 13.7mm Touch Diamond2 has a 3.2-inch WVGA screen, GPS, HSDPA, Wifi, a 5 megapixel cam with auto-focus support for most audio and video files and a Qualcomm MSM7200A CPU at 528 MHz. The 116 x 59.2 x 17.25mm Touch Pro2 has the same CPU a 3.6-inch WVGA display, HSDPA, GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a QWERTY keyboard. Both will run Windows Mobile 6.1.
