XH G1 Tests in Space
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Corporate News, Science

This has to be worth megabucks in advertising. First introduced in November of 2006, the HX G1 camcorder was launched October 23 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The cam for professionals features a DIGIC DV II HD image processor, a 20x zoom lens, and a Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer, at shoots at 24 fps. After performing a number of tests, the XH was given the “a-ok.” Just as the Timex watch will be remembered as the watch that could go underwater, “take a licking, and keep on ticking,” the XH may be remembered as the cam that not only has been to space and keeps on filming, it carries a price tag of around $6,000.00.

2006 Holiday Gift Guide: Canon EOS 30D

The 30D is an evolutionary upgrade from the EOS 20D and shares many of the same components/features such as the 8.19-megapixel CMOS sensor, shutter speed (1/8000), and autofocus system. New to the 30D is the 2.5” LCD with a greatly increased viewing angle as compared to the 1.8” LCD on the 20D. A deeper burst depth allows you to take more pictures in rapid succession before the camera writes to memory and is a welcome improvement when shooting in RAW mode. ISO speed is now adjustable while looking through the viewfinder and should make shooting with changing light conditions a much easier task.

Canon Recalls Copiers Due to Fire Hazard
Posted by Brian Viele Categories: Corporate News, Misc. Tech
Wait! Don’t push that button just yet. Within weeks of the Dell and Apple laptop battery dilemma, there is another huge recall in the midst from another Japanese company, but to the relief of CEO Idei, it’s not Sony this time. Apparently these Japanese companies have lost their touch with keeping the magic smoke inside electronics because Canon announced yesterday that it would recall more than 140,000 personal copiers because they could produce smoke and catch fire. The recall will cost the company somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.7M.
About 2 million of the copiers have been produced, but Canon estimates only 270,000 of the devices are still in use and only about 141,000 are affected by the recall. If that ratio holds, it means of these 1.7 million retired units, over 800,000 would have been affected by the recall. I wonder how many of them went out in a blaze of glory.
