Mother’s Day Alert! The Womens Digital Photo Wallet

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Accessories, Wearables, Misc. Tech,

Women's Digital Photo Wallet So we recently suggested some fascinating but very expensive Mother’s Day gifts, such as this Windows-Powered Sewing Machine. Here’s another cool gift idea for you non-Trumps: it’s the Women’s Digital Photo Wallet, which includes a removable photo viewer, able to store up to 55 color shots! You just transfer the photos via USB, and the battery is rechargeable. The 1.4 inch display is a tad small, but hey, it’s for a wallet, and it guarantees Mom will have the coolest gift to show off to her posse the next day. That alone is worth the $50 USD, isn’t it?

Sony Announces PlayStation Eye For PS3

Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Hardware, PlayStation 3,

PlayStation EyeSony today announced their next generation camera peripheral for the PlayStation 3. The new camera has lost the EyeToy moniker and will be known simply as the PlayStation Eye. While the new camera isn’t supporting HD resolutions like previously speculated, the Eye does have an upgraded resolution, supporting 320x240 at up to 120 frames per second and 640x480 at up to 60 frames per second. Optical quality should be vastly better, allowing clearer operation in low light as well as supporting dual zoom settings. Audio also has not been left behind in the update – a new noise-reduction array of four microphones sits atop the Eye, allowing for positional 4-channel audio and voice tracking in the new device. Altogether these improvements should vastly enhance the EyeToy experience. New games like the Eye of Judgement collectible card game will utilize the PlayStation Eye to insert real-time 3-D graphics over the images of the cards the player has. Sony’s semi-official ThreeSpeech blog has a Q&A with more information from Sony, and Famitsu has some screen shots showing the interaction between the PlayStation Eye and the real-world cards from Eye of Judgement, and Sony’s full press release continues below.

Bank Robber Visible on YouTube

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Internet, Videos,

Listen up, all you Gear Livers. Last week we told you about the robber with his own MySpace entry, in an effort to apprehend him somewhere between Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Sgt. Jarrad Copeland has told Gear Live that he has also posted on YouTube. Take a good look and if you think you have seen the alleged perpetrator, become a superhero and turn in the guy. We’d rather not meet him at our local convenience store and assume you probably would feel the same way.

Hewlett-Packard’s R837 Digital Camera Removes “Glow Eye” from Pets

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Cameras,

Cat with Glow Eye before and after Ok, fess up. You know you take as many photos of your pets Fido and Woody as you do of your newborn. But we bet most of those photos have “glow eye”, where your pet’s retina has that eerie “Village of the Damned”-look much like “red eye” in humans. The folks at Hewlett-Packard feel your pain, so it’s introducing the R837, a digital camera with built-in software that replaces the glow with a more realistic black dot. It even adds a small white dot to the eye, to show the direction Woody is looking at. In addition to having 7.2 MP, a 3X optical zoom and 3” display, the R837 also includes software that does away with blemishes and wrinkles—in humans, not pets. The R837 will be available next month for $230. However, the 1960 British horror classic “Village of the Damned” (and its sequel) are available now…

Lensbaby 3G In-depth Review

Lensbaby Review

So obviously, we at Gear Live are fans of new camera technology and the selective focus Lensbabies SLR lenses certainly fit the bill. We were already familiar with their selective focus lenses for digital cameras in the form of their second generation (2G) Lensbaby, but they were kind enough to provide us with one of their brand new 3G Lenbabies for review.

The Lensbaby is a bellows style lens for modern SLR cameras. They feature low dispersion multi-coated optical glass lens mounted within a flexible rubber tube to allow the photographer to tilt the lens side to side as well as compress it closer to the camera. Much like cameras from 100 years ago or more focusing is accomplished by simply compressing the bellows to move the lens closer or further away from the camera. We have a full, in-depth review for you, after the break.

Disney Pix Max

Leave it to Disney to make digital photography even more fun and kid-friendly. With the Disney Pix Max, a 3.0 MP camera from Digital Blue, kids can superimpose their favorite Disney character onto the picture they’re about to snap. Just press a button and voila! Mickey Mouse appears in the viewfinder and can be posed anywhere within the frame. The $80 camera contains 32 MB of internal storage, but in case your budding Ansel Adams needs more space, there’s a slot for SD and MMC memory cards. The camera requires 2 AA batteries (none of these are included). An editing package complete with Disney clip art is included.

Bleeding Edge TV 142: Lensbaby 3.0 Digital SLR Style Lens

We met up with the Lensbaby crew, where we got a look at the new Lensbaby 3G. If you are a digital SLR enthusiast and haven’t heard, the Lensbaby product is a selective focus SLR camera lens that allows you to take images with a focused sharp area that is surrounded by a stylistic blur. We have seen quite a few Lensbaby shots, and they really are quite unique and interesting. The Lensbaby 3G is available now for $270, which for an SLR lens, is pretty much a steal.
