One new iOS 8 feature that wasn't announced during Apple's WWDC 2014 keynote is time-lapse video capture. When using the camera app, you can swipe over to the new Time-Lapse option, and set up your device to start taking photos at dynamically selected intervals. So, if you want to capture a sunset, a cityscape, or an animal floating by in the water, when you are all said and done, your iOS device will stich the images together into a video. iOS 8 will be available later this fall.
One of the most popular photo editing apps in the App Store, Camera+, has now been updated to support iOS 6 and iPhone 5, as well as a new version for the iPad. One major new feature is the addition of iCloud Sync for the Lightbox. Go grab the update and if you haven't purchased it we highly recommend it, only 99 cents for all this goodness:
Canon has announced a couple of new superzoom cameras in the SX160 IS and SX500 IS. The SX160 is the successor to the SX150, while the SX500 is new to the lineup. Both cameras pack a 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, 720p video recording at 25 fps, and intelligent image stabilization. The higher-end SX500 IS brings with it a 30x, 24-720mm lens with a 32% improvement in autofocus speed and 33% decrease in shutter lag, making it the top model in the SX line.
Both cameras also boast a 3-inch LCD, with the SX500 having one that's twice as pixel dense as the SX160. Both cameras are set to ship in September, with the SX500 IS (black) selling for $330 while the SX160 IS (black or red) goes for $230.
Instagram is the massively popular photo-sharing social network that's garnered over 25 million users, and up until this point, it's only been available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users. That changes today. Instagram for Android works on any Android device running version 2.2 or higher, as long as they support OpenGL ES 2. Similar to the iOS version, you can share your Instagram posts to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Foursquare. Soon, Flickr will be an option as well.
You can download Instagram for Android right now from Google Play, completely free.
We bring you an in-depth look at the Nikon 1 J1 in this episode. We chat with Nikon's Steve Heiner about the compact point-and-shoot, which features a new mirrorless, small sensor system that packs in a flash module. The camera can grab 10 megapixel stills, records in full 1080p, and is the fastest autofocusing camera in Nikon's entire line. The Nikon 1 J1 even lets you capture images and 1080p video at the same time. This video was recorded at CES 2012.
In this episode ee give you a look at the Nikon D4 in this episode, the camera that Nikon is calling its next flagship model. We got up close and personal with the Nikon D4 at CES 2012, and got to speak with Nikon's Steve Heiner about the 16.2 megapixel beast of a DSLR. The D4 is constructed out of magnesium alloy, and has a thermal shield under the paint to keep the camera safe in the most extreme conditions. After over a year, Apple has released the follow-up to the iPhone 4, and its called the iPhone 4S. What do you do with your phone? If you're like most Americans, you make some calls, take some photos, and send some texts. Maybe you kill time with some games, check Facebook or Twitter, and look things up on the Web. If that's you, then the iPhone 4S ($199-$399 with contract on Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T) is your phone: it's the best cameraphone in the US, the fastest Web-browsing phone, and one that has finally licked the iPhone's calling problems. It's so good, that it's our current Editors' Choice on Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.
During today's WWDC 2011 keynote, Apple's Scott Forstall introduced some major upgrades to the Camera app that will ship with iOS 5. Some of the features that have us excited are things like direct access to the camera app right from the lock screen. Next to the swipe to unlock is a camera button that you can tap to take a picture quickly. Secondly, when you're in the camera app, you'll be able to use the volume-up button to snap the photo, rather than having to tap on the screen. Third, you'll be able to edit your photos right in the photo app. Apple is aiming to make their Camera and Photo apps your one-stop shop for images on your mobile devices.
