With all the hoopla over the new Kindle DX, we think it is nice that someone has come up with a Braille E-Book. Translation of a 500 page book can double the thickness of the tome, so designers Seon-Keun Park, Byung-Min Woo, Sun-Hye Woo and Jin-Sun Park use EAP technology to change the surface pattern via electromagnetic signals. This is still a prototype but maybe Amazon can make it its next hot product.

Touch Sight Camera for the Visually Impaired

What a unique idea. Designers Chueh Lee and team from Samsung, China came up with Touch Sight, a digital camera for the visually impaired. The cam records sound when the shutter button is pressed and can be used as a reference for managing the photos. The device has a lightweight Braille display sheet with a 3D image instead of an LCD. Once taken, the images can be down or uploaded for sharing. The team discovered that the forehead is the best place for this device to aim and stabilize. We can’t wait to see the results if the prototype becomes reality.

Haptica Braille Watch

The Haptica is a fine prototype of a Braille watch. The sight-impaired user gets an accurate reading by four groups of 4 dials made of dots on disks that only partially are displayed. They rotate the dot pattern in an extended circle to show the hours, minutes, and seconds. Designer David Chavez calls his ergonomic timepiece capable of working with analog or magnetic repulsion to move the dials along. Our kudos to the man and hope his idea reaches the market soon.
