Video Simulates Black Hole

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Science, Videos,

Want to know what it would feel like to hop into a black hole without having to travel in space and actually doing it? Andrew Hamilton and Gavin Polhemus at the University of Colorado built a computer code which is based on Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The “participant” goes on an orbit into the hole that weighs 5 million times the mass of the sun. Starlight behind the black hole is swallowed up, however light from other ones are merely bent. They are hoping that the knowledge will help physicists understand the inner workings of the hole.

Incident in LHC Causes Shutdown

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Science,

LHC MagnetIt seems that things are not so cheery with the LHC after all. There was a problem in sector 34 Friday, resulting in a helium leak. They believe that the source was a faulty connection between two magnets which may have melted, with the result being that CERN has shut down the device. They expect a minimum of 2 months worth of cooling off and repair. They also mentioned that no humans were at risk at any time, except for the ones who fell into the black hole (just kidding.)

LHC Works Without Earth Being Sucked Up

LHCWe are still here! In case you hadn’t heard, the LHC initialization is a success. After all the colliding beams are established, the researchers will be measuring and calibrating before performing 4 major experiments. One will help explain how gravity acts on mass and another will seek out the universe’s dark matter. Two others involve nature’s preference for matter over antimatter and matter as it began. Congrats to the team and thanks for allowing us to learn more without ending life as we know it, not to mention the kewl art it produced.

A pouch for the paranoid: cellphone blocker

brando black hole bag

Brando is now offering the Black Hole phone bag, a pouch for your phone with two pockets. One of the pockets is ‘normal’ and just carries your phone, but the other pocket features a cell blocking material which essentially turns it into a Faraday cage. Slipping your precious mobile into this special pocket blocks all incoming and outgoing cell signals. It seems like a strange solution when simply turning off the phone offers the same functionality without the $12 price tag, but somehow we suspect that that may not be enough for the ultra-paranoid among us.
