Dave De Vries & Carmilla Hyde

Carmilla Hyde I like it when people I’ve worked with go on to do interesting and successful things.

I worked with Dave de Vries years ago when Malibu Comics published some of his comics, done in association with artist Glenn Lumsden. The Southern Squadron was a repackaged series that originally appeared in their native Australia, and Bodyguard was a collection of short strips that were originally done for Australian Penthouse. Dave and Glenn were able to get some additional bucks from work that had already been done, published and paid for. Here’s to creator ownership!

At that time, Malibu also had the rights to The Puppet Master, a film from Charles Band’s low-budget movie studio, Full Moon. Dave and Glenn adapted it into a four-issue mini-series and since Band’s company was ponying up some of the cash, it was a chance to do a book in color for a change. It was a really nice book and one of our better sellers in the day. Dave and Glenn were also great guys, but we lost touch as times changed.

Bilodeau captures first Canadian home-gold

Canada has finally got that monkey off its back. On Sunday night in Vancouver, Quebec-born Alexandre Bilodeau won the gold medal in men’s moguls at the Olympic Games. His historic achievement marks the first time a Canadian athlete has won a gold medal on Canadian soil. When Canada hosted the 1976 Winter Olympics in Montreal, they finished with five silvers and six bronze. In Calgary in 1988, Canada won two silvers and three bronze. The home-gold medal had eluded Canadians for over three decades, but the long wait is officially over.

John Mayer Comes to Britney Spears’ Defense

John Mayer has defended Britney Spears for lip-synching in Australia.

The “Gravity” singer - who is also in Australia promoting his latest album - blasted fans who had called for a refund after the “Womanizer” star’s show in Perth after she sparked outrage by not singing live for her whole performance.

“If you’re shocked that Britney was lip-synching at her concert and want your money back, life may continue to be hard for you,” Mayer wrote on Twitter.

Britney, 27, was said to have hid in her hotel room on Saturday following her performance on Friday night. “Britney is aware of all this and she’s extremely upset by it,” a rep for the star said.

Britney Spears’ Lip-Synching Stirs Controversy in Australia

Even though Britney Spears isn’t exactly known for her live vocal talents, someone wants to make sure those Down Under know what they’re paying for.

Australia’s Minister for Fair Trading for New South Wales is tossing around the idea of including a disclaimer of sorts in concert-related materials. “It is Britney’s ‘prerogative’ to lip-sync, and it is my job to make sure consumers know what they are paying for up front,” Virginia Judge said in a statement.

Judge doesn’t necessarily believe Britney’s upcoming performance will be a disappointment, she just wants fans entering with their eyes wide open. “Personally I would rather see a live set from a local artist,” the government employee said, “but I am sure Britney’s fans will be treated to a spectacular show.”

Austalians Developing 10TB Disc

Discs While most discs can hold about 5GB data now, researchers from the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia have created five dimensional discs that can hold 2,000 times that amount. The team created the 10TB disc with a color dimension that uses nanoparticles that react to light according to shape, so that information can be recorded on different wavelengths. Polarization was also applied for recording layers of data. While there are still issues to work out, they foresee the discs in the market in the next 5 to 10 years. That will give us all time to save up the money to buy that much data in one disc.

Can you go without power for one hour? Can you live without the telly, computer, radio or microwave for 60 minutes? That’s exactly why Earth Hour was created. This year, over 500 cities in 75 countries have committed, twice the number that participated last year. The idea originated in Sydney, Australia two years ago with 2.2 million homes and businesses showing their concern about global warming. Check the site to see if your city is on the list and be prepared for blackout March 28, 8:30 p.m.

Nicole Kidman Not Proud of Australia Performance

I guess we shouldn’t be expecting any nominations for Nicole Kidman this season.

In an interview with a Sydney radio station, the 41-year-old admitted she wasn’t proud of her performance in Australia. The insecurity about her work in the lavish Baz Luhrmann production even forced the actress to quickly free her native country.

How will Will Smith remember Winter Solstice 2008? As the weekend he placed second.

Prior to Friday’s premieres, number crunchers were already predicting a close race between headliners Jim Carrey and Will Smith. Unfortunately for Warner Bros., Yes Man‘s ultimate victory felt slightly hollow. The comedy’s $18.2 million gross was nowhere near the figures Carrey used to generate. (Bruce Almighty‘s premiere earned $68 million in 2003; Liar Liar took in $31.4 million in 1997.) Yes did, though, do better than 2005’s Fun with Dick and Jane. (That film raked in $14.1 million during its open.)

Will Smith didn’t have much to celebrate over the last three days either. His latest film, Seven Pounds, only took in $14.8 million. That’s a number almost unheard of in Smith-land. The drama, directed by Pursuit of Happyness’ Gabriele Muccino, was the actor’s lowest grosser since Ali. (That film earned $14.7 million when it debuted in December 2001.)

Box Office Breakdown: The Day The Earth Stood Still Stands Tall

Mediocre reviews couldn’t keep The Day the Earth Stood Still from vaulting into first place this weekend.

The sci-fi remake starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly earned $30.5 million over the last three days, more than doubling the take of its nearest competitor. Although Earth had the smallest debut for a #1 film since October 17th (when Max Payne grossed $17.6 million), the Fox feature only cost a reported $80 million to make. It was also the studio’s best open since Horton Hears a Who unfolded in back in March.

The only other new entries in this week’s Top Ten were Nothing Like the Holidays and Milk. Holidays took in $3.5 million and scored itself a 7th place finish. Meanwhile, Milk - which had actually reached #10 before - reentered the charts at #9.
