We had no idea that our quest to grab a few iPhone 3G units at launch here in the Seattle area would turn out to be an utter fiasco. Last year, when the original iPhone launched, we had a much longer wait in line (over 19 hours versus just over 8 hours) last year, and were further back in the line to boot. However, it was a complete failure on both Apple and AT&T’s part in making sure that the experience went as smoothly as possible.
Oh, sure, we finally have our iPhone 3Gs working and in good shape, but it took much, much longer to get them in that condition than it should have. Read on as we relive the events that took place earlier this afternoon at the Alderwood Mall Apple Store. We already told you about our crazy iPhone 3G launch day purchase fiasco, but now we wanna hear from you guys. Was what we experienced accurate? So, remember that story we posted yesterday about Canada’s Rogers Wireless ripping off iPhone 3G customers? Well, apparently, that wasn’t the end of that story. Since yesterday, we have found out that Apple has decided to reroute some of the iPhone 3G units that were meant for Canada, and they are instead sending them to Europe. Now, just a few minutes ago, the news broke that Apple Stores up in Canada will not be carrying the iPhone 3G as planned. This decision is obviously a direct response to the ridiculous prices ($60 per month for 150 minutes of talk time) that Rogers Wireless has decided to place on the iPhone 3G plans. This is getting juicy!

Apple and AT&T have finally been letting those of us in the US in on their iPhone 3G launch plans. As it turns out, unlike last year’s 6:00 PM iPhone launch, the iPhone 3G is going to be available bright and early at 8:00 AM. AT&T confirmed that their stores will be opening at 8:00 sharp to start selling the new iPhone - and it makes sense. Since people need to sign up for lines of service, things may go a bit slower this time around. Oh, also, an 8 AM launch doesn’t mean there will be any less of a line. That line will just grow huge overnight instead of during the afternoon. Break out the sleeping bags!

In a move that is completely shocking to most, on the morning of a WWDC keynote, the Apple Online Store has gone down! What in the blazes?!
In all seriousness though, at the very least, this confirms that we will definitely be seeing some new hardware when Steve Jobs takes the stage in 15 minutes or so. Or Mobile Me subscription packages.
The Apple Store online went down again this morning, and when it came back up, we were graced by the presence of updated iMacs. For those keeping count, the update finally brings the Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn processors to the iMac, and the entire line also gets a 1066 MHz front-side bus and 6MB L2 cache. Pricing are remaining the same, so for $1,199 you walk away with a 20-inch iMac sporting a 2.4GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, and ATi Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics card. If you would rather go the 24-inch route, you can get a 3.06GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, and a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS. While the internals have changed, don’t expect to see anything new on the outside. These are still the same aluminum and glass beauts we saw last August. Check out the unboxing video after the jump.

Apple has finally gotten around to posting the details on how early iPhone owners can claim their $100 Apple Store credit. You know, the one that was a response to the backlash the company received after dropping the price on the iPhone by $200 - or 33% - just 61 days after it’s launch? It takes about five minutes, and Apple has done it in a way that makes it so only people who actually have the purchased iPhone in their possession, and activated with AT&T, can claim it. Here’s how it works:
- Head on over to the iPhone Store Credit page
- Input your iPhone’s AT&T phone number and serial number into the fields on the site
- You will receive an SMS which includes an access code. Enter the code into the site
- Print the result page, which includes the codes you need to redeem the credit at any Apple Store location, or at the Apple Online Store
To be safe, we’d recommend claiming right away, as you only have until November 30 to do so. If you bought your iPhone between August 22 and September 4, skip straight to the Apple Store itself, as you aren’t eligible for a $100 store credit - instead, you’ll just receive $200 in cash. For those who receive the credit, you can purchase just about anything sold by Apple, except another Apple Store Gift Card or an iTunes electronic Gift Certificate. You can use up to six credit codes when making a purchase at an Apple Retail Store and up to four credit codes at the Apple Online Store.
According to Robert Scoble, who had every intention of picking up a new iSight at a California Apple Store, apparently the peripheral is quite the popular gadget.
So, we went down to the Apple store and tried to buy an iSight. Turns out they are sold out. The salesperson said they can’t keep them in stock. A customer behind me was looking for one too and said that they are sold out everywhere.
This one is absolutely amazing to us, seeing as how just about every new Mac out there (save for the Mac Pro and Mac mini) comes with an embedded iSight. Of course, this could just mean that Apple is getting ready to refresh the iSight line - after all, it’s long overdue and could use an overhaul. At the very least, Apple needs to get the things to comply with EU standards.
