Beastie Boys Awarded $1.7 Million

Ad-Rock and Mike DBeastie Boys have been awarded $1.7 million in a copyright lawsuit.

The surviving members of the hip-hop group - Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz - have been handed the payout after winning their legal case against Monster Beverage Corporation, which they sued for the unauthorized use of their music in a video advert.

The commercial featured five of the "Fight For Your Right" hitmakers' songs in a "Beastie Boys Megamix" and a message which read, "RIP MCA" to promote a show in 2012.

The groups' final member Adam "MCA" Yauch, who passed away in the same year after a three-year battle with salivary gland cancer, stated in his will that his likeness or art - which includes the music he made with Beastie Boys - was not to be used in any promotional material. "In no event may my image or name or any music or artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes," the document read.

Cinecast: ‘Magnificent Seven’ Rewrite, Keanu on ‘Bill & Ted’ Sequel

Brad Pitt on a '12 Years a Slave' poster in Italy+ After a Tumblr user in Italy questioned a 12 Years a Slave poster featuring Brad Pitt (whose role in the film - despite his producing credit - is minimal), Lionsgate released a statement claiming that the advertisements (another similar one featured Michael Fassbender, who is also a supporting actor) were unauthorized and not approved by the filmmakers.

+ Saving Mr. Banks director John Lee Hancock has been picked to rewrite the Magnificent Seven remake, which Tom Cruise was previously attached to work on. No word yet as to who is set to replace Cruise.

+ In doing promotional rounds for his latest film 47 Ronin, Keanu Reeves ruled out any participation from him in the upcoming Point Break remake.

+ Fortunately for Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure fans, Reeves did state that he's open to doing a third film, which would follow Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

Debenhams Lingerie Ads

U.K. retailer Debenhams made a bold move in the fight against the over-airbrushing of women in advertisements this week. The company has announced it will ban major retouching of lingerie models in the future, hopefully setting a precedent for American counterparts like Macy's.

"We want to help customers feel confident about their figures without bombarding them with unattainable body images... As well as being a positive from a moral point of view, it ticks the economic boxes as well. Millions of pounds a year are spent by organizations retouching perfectly good images," said the company's head lingerie buyer, Sharon Webb.

Advertisements Inspire Paul McCartney

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Artist News, Pop, Rock,

Paul McCartneyPaul McCartney used to be inspired by cinema adverts. The Beatles star says his early influences included anything that would make him laugh, and remembers he and bandmate George Harrison were particularly amused by a particular furniture commercial.

"There were millions of things. Information we'd had from very early childhood and from teenagehood, when you're going down the cinema, seeing something funny and making a song out of it. George and I really loved cinema adverts, for instance, which we used to take the p**s out of. There was one for furniture called Link, showing this couple eyeing stuff up, where the catchphrase was, 'Thinking of Linking?' And me and George were like, 'You know what? That's a good title.' So one of my earliest songs went, 'Thinking of linking my love with you, thinking and linking can only be done by two.' Terrible! We never did anything with it, of course."

James Franco: Sex Films Lost Me Advertising Deals

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrity Gossip, Filmmaking,

James FrancoJames Franco has lost advertising deals because the companies were unhappy with him backing films about gay sex and the porn industry.

The Oz the Great and Powerful star recently produced Kink, a documentary about a hardcore porn studio, and directed Interior: Leather Bar - which features gay sex scenes - and he admits working on such daring projects is always a "risk" because of how it impacts other elements of his career.

"It is a risk. The films I have did get a lot of praise, but I did get some pressure from other areas. I was supposed to do a commercial with this company and they pulled out because they weren't happy, they didn't like the subject matter of the films. It was a champagne company. You'd think they'd be grown up enough but I've had it happen with this company and a car company as well," he admitted.

However, the 34-year-old actor insists he will never let the decisions he makes on projects to be influenced by how they will impact on his later career: "If I'm at the threshold of doing a project and the question comes up, 'Will this be harmful to your career?,' I never want that to be a deciding factor."

Jessica SimpsonJessica Simpson has been "obsessed" with her weight her entire life.

The Fashion Star mentor - who lost 60 pounds on the diet program following the birth of her first daughter Maxwell seven months ago, before announcing she is pregnant with her second child - admits she was a yo-yo dieter all of her life.

In a newly released Weight Watchers 360 advertisement in which she teams up with the company's other spokesperson Jennifer Hudson, that will hit screens on Thursday, the 32-year-old star says, "I obsessed about my weight my whole life... I was always on some new life-stopping diet." The former size 0 star then claims Weight Watchers, "let's me be me," and says "I amazed myself."

Meanwhile, Dreamgirls star Jennifer admits that the program completely changed her life as well and helped her lose 80 pounds over the past two years. "I was overweight my whole life. I figured I was just born that way," the 31 year-old singer says.

Watch every Apple commercial from 1977-2012

Speaking of marketing, watch every Apple commercial from 1977 to present day. There's about 485 commercials, which includes the famous Mac vs PC, the technicolored hipster iPod dance ads and, of course, the iconic 1984 Macintosh SuperBowl spot directed by Sir Ridley Scott. One of my favorites, the first iPhone ad 'Surprised' from 2007.

New Marc Jacobs Ad Shocks, Humors

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, Videos,

With fashion advertisements constantly pushing the boundries of what's acceptable to show to the public, it comes as no surprise that Marc Jacobs - a brand that has recently been slammed for portraying Dakota Fanning a la Lolita style in a fragrance ad - would come out with a sunglasses ad featuring a man who appears to be masturbating in public.

Seen above, the man - who was discovered to be an employee from the brand's retail store in SoHo - is initially seen from behind, making a movement with his right arm which indicates that he is pleasuring himself in the middle of a park. The ad then cuts to a frontal shot of him, and it is revealed that he is merely cleaning his sunglasses. Before leaving the frame of the shot, he gives the camera a wry smile.

Beastie Boys Songs Banned From Adverts

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Artist News, Gossip, Hip-Hop & Rap, Rock,

Beastie BoysAdam Yauch's will prevents his music being used in adverts.

The Beastie Boys rapper - known as MCA - passed away from cancer in May aged 47, and his will lists a clause preventing his music or art being used in adverts or promotions. "Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes," it reads. Rolling Stone noted the last part of the line was added in handwriting.

The will also leaves his fortune of $6.4 million to Yauch's wife, Dechen Yauch, and their 13-year-old daughter. Dechen also has the right to sell and manage her husband's artistic property.

It is not clear how the will's wording affects the potential use of Beastie Boys' music in adverts in future, as the band also comprises Adam "Ad Rock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond.
