Video: Latest Apple iPad 2 ad: ‘Now, There’s This’

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Videos

Apple has debuted a new ad for its popular iPad 2, touting things that Cupertino said wasn't possible before its tablet.

The ad, titled "Now," highlights the versatile nature of iPad apps. "Now, you can watch a newspaper," a voiceover says, zooming in on someone flipping through the Wall Street Journal app. "Now you can listen to a magazine," the voice says, switching to an interactive "Fantastic Mr. Fox" feature from Spin magazine.

The ad also flashes to someone watching "The King's Speech," video chatting via FaceTime, and taking an online class. "Hold an entire bookstore [via iBooks] and touch the stars," the ad concludes, flashing to an astronomy app, "because now, there's this."

This, of course, is the iPad 2, and the commercial ends with a shot of the updated tablet sitting on a table, presumably waiting for you to dole out hundreds of dollars for the pleasure of its company.

Samsung Epic 4G ad with Master Chief?

If you’ve seen the new commercial then you might have been fooled into watching the whole thing thinking it was a new Halo: Reach commercial (raises hand). The similarities are probably not a coincidence considering Halo: Reach is set to be the biggest game of the year, and all eyes are on it right now. Knowing this, Samsung could have purposely chosen to borrow the money making look of Master Chief.

The start of the ad depicts a character bearing a strong resemblance to Halo’s Master Chief. The pseudo Chief is then chased by an alien space craft which bombards the Spartan-like clone with some heavy missile fire. Unmasking himself, the Samsung’s Spartan hops into his own aircraft, epic chase ensues. The terrain containing the massive battle is then revealed to take place in the palm of your hand - the slogan for the theater-like experience promised by the Samsung Galaxy S. All Halo inspired themes aside, it’s a pretty cool commercial, though you have no clue what it’s about until the very end. Microsoft states that “the commercial in question is not sanctioned by Microsoft.” However, whether or not Microsoft will want to have the look alike Master Chief hero pulled from the air is not known at this point.

Xbox 360 Final Fantasy Ad Banned in the UK

An ad for the version of Final Fantasy XIII has been removed from UK screens after being accused of using PS3 footage. Sqaure Enix admitted to the ruse, but added that the ad was made entirely from pre-rendered cut scenes that look no different from the Xbox 360 version. The PS3 version of FF13 does indeed look a bit sharper, but not enough to really be noticeable, especially when viewing it in standard definition broadcasted over the air. However, Square states that the ad, comprised of FMV cut scenes, “could have been captured on any device”. Though, apparently the UK doesn’t take too kindly to duping viewers with interchangeable video game footage, as the ad has since been banned from the air. See the ad and judge for yourself above.

The gloves are off: Verizon iPhone attack commercials go full swing

iPhone Verizon ad

Oh man, you’ve got to love how Verizon Wireless has gotten so bold now that they’ve finally got a killer device in the to brag about. You’ve also got to love how Apple is getting a taste of their own medicine, after running the “I’m a Mac” ads for years now. Verizon is aiming to highlight their phone offerings, as well as their huge 3G network, in their holiday commercials that dump on the iPhone and AT&T. There are three so far, and we must admit, they’re pretty clever. You can watch all three commercials, one of which sees the iPhone banished to the Land of Misfit Toys, after the break.

Ads with sound hit Xbox 360 dashboard

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Culture, Microsoft, Xbox 360, Xbox Live

Well, how’s this for a slap in the face? It looks like ads that have sound incorporated into them have come to the dashboard. As you can see in the video above, the ad appears in a tile, and if you bring that tile into primary view, sound automatically plays - even if you don’t select the ad. That’s pretty low, considering you paid for the console, paid for the games, and more than likely, pay $50 a year for an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription. Here’s hoping that in the Xbox 360 Fall 2009 dashboard update doesn’t bring even more advertising with it.

Super Bowl to Feature 3D Commercial

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Home Entertainment

3D GlassesYou know that some of us dig the commercials more than the Super Bowl itself and although there will be less of them this year because of the bad economy, there will be something to make up for it. This year, in addition to talking creatures and other assorted weirdness, the 60 sec. 3D SoBe Lifewater commercial is the first ever crossover with “Monsters vs Aliens,” the new DreamWorks movie that will be out March 27. Look for the spot at the end of the second quarter. You can get the glasses at local grocery stores, Dollar General and K-Mart. Better hurry as there are only 125 million pairs available.
