MONDAY 12/22)- Prison Break (FOX, 9pm): “Sara is waiting for news of Michael in a luxury hotel, and she’s not enjoying the luxury.” She becomes unreasonably paranoid anytime someone offers to turn down her bed.
- Momma’s Boys (NBC, 9pm): “The guys go on group dates planned by their moms and individual dates they planned.” Until the big Jay Leno move, NBC will just run MTV’s hand-me-downs.
- The Hills (MTV, 10pm): Season 4 finale. “Lauren and Heidi run into each other and are reminded of why they used to be friends.” I, quite frankly, could use a reminder as well.
- 17 Kids & Counting (TLC, 10pm): “The family welcomes the arrival of Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar.” Wake me up when they get to “J.Lo.”

Top Chef Chicago: Manuel Packs His Knives and Goes

Episode 4 of Top Chef Chicago on Bravo TV was all about meshing technique with imagination. In the end, gentlemanly chef Manuel paid the price for his partner Spike’s lack of both. Manuel is out and classically trained molecular gastronomist Richard was Top Chef of the night thanks to his team’s whimsical take on a salmon dish inspired by Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.
This episode began with a rather mundane Quickfire Challenge. Guest judge, French Chef Daniel Boulud, asked them to create a vegetable plate showcasing classic techniques, including three specific techniques designed to impress the reknowned French chef. Boulud says technique is the foundation of any worthy chef.
We learned that front-runner Richard and pretty boy Ryan both worked for Chef Boulud at some point in their careers. But Ryan brushed it off saying his stint with Boulud didn’t last long because it wasn’t his style of cooking. (For a short biography of each chef competing in season 4 click here .)
Most of the chefs seemed intimidated by this challenge. Lisa said “classical” isn’t her style. (I’m getting the feeling that applies to ANYTHING she doesn’t like to do.) In the end Chef Boulud’s least favorites were Nikki’s use of endive as a boat (too simple). Lisa’s plate was deemed too cluttered and unfocused and Manuel’s plate did not express enough technique. Chef Boulud called it “level one”.

The “A Christmas Story” Leg Lamp

Chances are, you caught an airing of the holiday neo-classic “A Christmas Story” during the annual marathon on TBS—or like us, already know the movie by heart. Either way, you certainly recognize the iconic Leg Lamp pictured, a “major award” won by Ralphie’s clueless dad. If you’d like one of your own, here’s your chance! The ultra-tacky lamp comes in 2 sizes: 20 inches ($40 USD), and 40 inches ($200 USD), the latter being the same size as the original. A 3-way switch lights the leg, lamp or both. The All-Time Best Holiday Movies

Crowds, stores and shopping. The holiday season is often more about being annoyed than feeling cheerful, at least until all the shopping and spending are done. Get yourself back into a holiday mood by setting the stage for goodwill toward man. Watch one of the all-time best holiday movies, and remember why this time of year is so much fun to begin with.
The Santa Clause:
The newest film on the countdown and one of Tim Allen’s bigger Disney hits; this flick has it all. First, you’ve got hilarious Tim Allen as a cynical Santa. Throw in cute elves, a few good special effects, and that adorable little boy who plays Allen’s son, and you’re looking at a modern holiday classic. Funny and heartwarming, The Santa Clause has the perfect blend of comedy and feeling.
A Christmas Story:
You’ll shoot your eye out! It’s just not Christmas until you sit down with this film at least once. The story of little Ralphie and his Christmas quest for a Red Rider BB gun has a universal effect on young and old alike. The scary Santa, the hilarious fantasy sequences, the cute little brother, and the desire to receive just one present above all others. Add it all together, and you’ve got a Christmas tale that offers everything from laughs to love.
