Happy birthday to the Funky Flashman himself, Stan Lee, who turns 90. Buzzfeed has his life in pictures.
Here’s what I like about the internets: finding a feature length animated film adapting a graphic novel I’ve never heard of. In this case, it’s Alois Nebel, “a Czech feature length animation directed by Tomas Lunak and based on a trilogy of graphic novels by Jaroslav Rudis and Jaromir 99.” There’s a preview of it at the link.

My pal, Kim "Howard" Johnson, wrote for Starlog and Comics Scene back in the day, and turned that into a successful career as the guy who got to follow Monty Python around the world and observe them in the wild.
He's written tons of books about the Pythons and appears in Life Of Brian, and once worked as John Cleese's assistant. His wife, Laurie Bradach, was an editor at Joe Quesada's and Jimmy Palmiotti's Event Comics where she oversaw books like Ash and Painkiller Jane. Together the two of them have just announced their own publishing company, DoubleDare Books, based in Illinois.
Their first launch is The Dare Club, the start of a mystery series that sounds very appealing. Here are the details:

I really want a copy of Pat Mills and John Wagner’s Shako, The Only Bear On The CIA Death List. “Shako is a true classic from the early days of 2000AD when blood-thirsty ultra-violence was a hallmark of an anarchic new comic.”
Want to know what James O’Barr (The Crow) has been doing lately? He worked on Sundown, a Western horror tale now told in motion comics form.

Spain Rodriguez passed away following a lengthy illness. Spain was one of the great cartoonists to emerge from the underground comix movement of the 1960s.
He didn’t draw or write like any one else, either in underground comix or corporate mainstream comics and his work was always top-notch. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but by all accounts, he was a good guy.

Webcomic: The Double Life of Miranda Turner

My pal the artist and writer George Kambadais has thrown his stylus into the ring and launched his own webcomic.
The Double Life of Miranda Turner follows the adventures of Miranda, whose life is about to get shaken up. Her sister, Linda (who, according to George, "is based on the public domain Harvey Comics character Black Cat"), was a costumed crimefighter who was killed. She exists now as a ghost, seen only by Miranda. And the ghostly Linda wants Miranda to pick up where she left off and save the world... something Miranda doesn’t believe she can do.
There's crime, mystery, adventure, and the ongoing sibling banter between two sisters that continues even though one of them is deceased. It's just getting going, and George says his "plan is to do 5 pages every 15 days."

I think this may be the first must-have book of 2013 for me.
Virgil Partch was one of the great cartoonists. I first discovered him doing his relatively normal syndicated comic strip, Big George. But I soon discovered a book collection of his old gag cartoons and realized that he was a complete and utter nut.
He had a wild line, drew insane-looking men and women, and his situations were often over-the-top - it was like looking at a single frame of a Tex Avery cartoon, but signed with Partch’s signature signature: VIP. That shouldn’t have been surprising since Partch was a former animator.

Remember Lisa Loeb, the singer with the glasses who had a big, big hit song with "Stay" that popped up in the movie Reality Bites?
She's carved out quite an interesting career for herself with more music, a couple of children's CD's, voiceover work, some TV work and even her own brand of glasses.
But now she has a new CD coming out and for giddy comic book fans, the cover art is by Tess Fowler.
Tess posted it on her Facebook page for all to see. The album is called No Fairy Tale and you can see why she (who's worked on the indy comics Charmed, Grimm Fairy Tale and Wonderland) is the perfect artist for it.

When Larry Gelbart likes someone’s writing, I pay attention, especially when that writer is a friend of mine.
Television writer Doug Molitor has just released his first novel, Memoirs of a Time Traveler, in paperback through Amazon’s createspace.
