Oink, the service started by Kevin Rose's new incubator, Milk, is now live. You can download the companion app, Oink Builder, on the App Store now for free. Oink allows you to rank and rate the things around you. Unlike other services, like Yelp, that have you rate places, Oink is about rating the things inside the places, rather than the places themselves. Hit the video above to see what we mean.

Word Lens for iPhone review

There was a time when a jaunt through a foreign country meant stashing a translation guide on your pocket so that you could whip it out at a moment's notice to read a sign or understand a spoken word. It's a rudimentary system that's worked for ages, but Quest Visual looks to change the game with its Word Lens free iPhone (free, but language packs cost $4.99) app, which translates printed text on the fly.
How It Works
The concept behind Word Lens is a simple one: You point your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or fourth generation iPod touch's camera at printed text and the app translates the word on the fly simply by tapping the green button in the toolbar. That ability isn't included by default; you have to purchase one of the $4.99 language packs. Unfortunately, only two packs are available at the moment—English to Spanish, and Spanish to English—so the selection is extremely limited. Other undisclosed languages are in the works.

New York Nearest Subway augmented reality iPhone 3GS app

For all of you who thought that the compass inside the iPhone 3GS was just a waste, think again. We’ve seen some apps that will be making use of the compass in ways you never thought possible, and one such app is New York Nearest Subway. Developed by acrossair, New York Nearest Subway is best explained as an augmented reality app that overlays information on top of a real-world view. You pull up the app, and the camera view is shown, with information telling you about which direction to walk to get to the nearest train station. It is truly genius. Hit the video above to see it in action. It’s not available just yet, but once it is, we will let you know.
You use this app alongside Exit Strategy NYC, and you are golden.

Exit Strategy NYC cuts down subway travel time

We’ve got a couple of NYC MTA-related subway apps we want to share with you today, the first being Exit Strategy NYC. A simple app, Exit Strategy NYC basically shows you which car you should ride in depending on where you plan on getting off the train. You tell it what line you are riding, and which direction you are going, along with telling it your final destination. It will then show you which train cars are closes to the exits and staircases for transferring.
We do know that a majority of the lines and stops in all of New York City are covered, but there are a few that aren’t complete. Still, those will come in a future update, and this app can really end up saving you a ton of time. Even better, it’s only $1.99, which means it costs less than a ride on the subway. This one is highly recommended, and you can purchase Exit Strategy NYC now in the App Store.

Next time you travel overseas, think about downloading eCurrency. The simple interface supports 34 currencies with rates provided by the European Central Bank. All its functions are on one screen and it has a “shake to inverse calculation” feature. There is also a designated keypad for faster entry and it is compatible with iPod touch and iPhone and with a 2.0 software update. eCurrency is available at the App Store for $1.99.

TripIt and FlightTrack Pro have teamed for this handy app for travelers. Forward a travel confirmation to the site and they send a master itinerary with maps, city guides and weather guides. It will also provide flight status updates, live tracker maps with weather updates and can track flights of other family members or coworkers. After the $9.99 initial download, future upgrades are free.

Navigating Washington on Your iPhone

We are still finding CES stories and certainly don’t want you guys to miss out. One of the apps to hit the show was the TocToc iPhone. It is an independent navigational application that works without storing maps. Via a wireless network, users can get real time traffic info including problems they should avoid. Of course you can also get address direction, points of interest, phone and zipcode access and messaging capability. It has a simple user interface and is available for both automobiles and pedestrians.
