Bleeding Edge TV 297: Unibody MacBook Pro RAM upgrade tutorial

Last month, released their long-awaited and redesigned notebook, which spurred a bunch of excitement for all gadget lovers out there. The new unibody enclosure is sleek, and Apple even went out of their way to make it easy to upgrade the critical components that live inside the notebook yourself. Behind one door lies the hard drive and battery, both user-replaceable. Remove a few more screws, and you have direct access to your RAM.

Of course, these things are better explained in video than they are in text, which is why we’re here. In this episode of Bleeding Edge TV, we give you a full tutorial on what you need to do to upgrade the RAM in your new MacBook or MacBook Pro. If you are wondering why you’d want to do this, well, just compare the cost of what Apple charges you for 4GB of RAM versus the cost of buying the RAM yourself from a place like Newegg. You’ll save yourself a couple hundred bucks if you have a few minutes to spare.

Check out the tutorial, and let us know how it goes for you if you end up giving it a try.

New Xbox Experience

If your hopes at getting into the preview program were dashed on the two previous opportunites for you to get in, you may still be in luck. Major Nelson just announced on his blog that a third (and final) wave of acceptances will be sent out tonight - and they’ll be adding over 10,000 more Xbox Live members this time around. Of course, you had to have signed up for the NXE Preview Program a few weeks ago, as they aren’t accepting anyone who didn’t throw their name into the hat. The email notifying you of your acceptance will be coming from msftconn@microsoft.com, so be sure to let your spam filter know that it might be arriving. Good luck, and if you don’t make it, the official release is only six days away anyway.

Amazon selling HD DVDs for $7.99 each

Okay, we know that some of us put all our stock into , going all out on movies and players, only to be burned by the eventual victory. However, that also means that HD DVD player owners can enjoy some steep discounts on media for the failed format. As an example, Amazon is currently selling 99 HD DVD titles for $7.99. Seriously, perfectly good movies like The Bourne Supremacy, Army of Darkness, and the like, all for $7.99. Meanwhile, those of us buying Blu-ray are doing so at $20 or more a pop! See? Doesn’t that make you feel better about your HD DVD investment? We didn’t think so.

Wireless Wipes Kill What’s Living On Your Phone

Wireless WipesI still remember the first time I went to the Apple Store to check out the then new iPhone and iPod touch; although I was impressed by the slick new touchscreen, I was horrified and disgusted by the visible filth from curious hands, and being the germophobe I am, I asked the sales associate to clean the Gerber Baby goo off of the screen.

Enter Wireless Wipes – the first portable sanitizer pack designed specifically to clean mobile phones, PDA’s and laptop computer screens. Though these little cleansing cloths won’t do anything for your phone’s internal bugs, they will wipe out the bugs living on the outside – you know, the kind that’ll get you sick. A 2006 U.K. study found that our little electronic devices carry tens of thousands of bacteria, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, a type of antibiotic resistant bacteria that can be deadly if ingested. In another study, an Arizona microbiologist tested 25 random mobile phones and found the staph bug growing on nearly half of them! Staph, in case you didn’t know, causes everything from pimples and boils, to pneumonia and meningitis – ailments most of us try to avoid.

Wireless Wipes cost $2 for a resealable 10-pack, which is certainly more than you’d pay for most cleaning wipes, but what sets these wipes apart is that they are fast drying, non-streaking and most importantly, non-corrosive. Or you could just keep putting that Petri dish of a phone up to your face. I’m not here to judge…

OmniFocus for iPhone

One of my absolute favorite apps, OmniFocus, just received a small update, meant to kill a few bugs. In case you have yet to give it a try, OmniFocus is an organizational tool solely meant to keep you on task, focused, while maintaining peace of mind that you aren’t forgetting anything. It’s configurable in so many ways, that just about anyone is able to fit it into their workflow. There is an iPhone version, as well as a desktop version for OS X, and the two can sync together. Anyhow, here are the details of the recent update for OmniFocus for iPhone:

Changes in the minor v1.1.1 update:
Fixed a bug which could leave the user at a blank screen after adding a new item.
Fixed a bug which caused the app to be unresponsive after converting an action to a project.
Fixed a few places where English was still visible in the Japanese translation.

Changes in the minor v1.1.2 update (released November 13, 2008):
Updated the Settings icon to avoid potential confusion with the iPhone’s built-in Settings application.

As we said before, if you haven’t already, you owe it to yourself to check out OmniFocus.

“Lost” creator JJ Abrams has released footage from the new Star Trek prequel in London. Actors include Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock and Simon Pegg (“Shaun of the Dead”) as Scotty, who considers himself a “fully paid up geek.” There are also four segments that feature Leonard Nimoy as the elder Spock, including one in which he delivers the line, “Live long and prosper.” Expect the film to have a May 8, 2009 release in both the UK and the U.S (even though the trailer says Christmas.)

Rubik’s Mirror Block

The new Rubik’s cube may look simple without the colors, but the Mirror Block has 9 different sizes of blocks on each face. Solve it with different patterns and it will turn it into an irregular shape. Those who can do the original cube at breakneck speed will jump at the change to challenge themselves with the new puzzle for ~$20.00, while those who still have yet to master it might want to hold off until your more talented friends are done and will lend you one.

Small enough for a pocket or backpack, it comes with a USB cord for recharging through your PC. The DJ Speaker is available in red, black or white at a price of $45.99. We are thinking that this may be one of those gadgets that’s fun for the first 10 minutes, as evidenced by the demonstration.
