A Weapon of Truly Epic Proportions: Alice’s Vorpal Blade

I may not be a blood-thristy twisted Alice, but I do enjoy beautiful things. In commemoration of the original Alice, Epic Weapons, in collaboration with Electronic Arts, have created a replica of the Vorpal Blade from American McGee’s Alice. It is adorned with etched molds which replicate this weapon in all its beautiful detail. Since this is a high quality replica made from Japanese stainless steel and standing at 18 5/8 inches in length, Epic Weapons is offering only 1,000 of these commemorative Alice knifes. If there were an award for most underrated OS than Palm’s webOS would certainly be giving an acceptance speech. However, Palm is looking to tailor a new acceptance speech for ‘best OS around’ by introducing webOS 2.0. The new features slated for the upgrade are momentous to say the least, and with any luck HP will be able to help put Palm’s webOS where it should be in the smartphone market.
Stacks
Improving upon the already prolific multi-tasking capabilities of webOS, version 2.0 will make cards even more intuitive and easier to sort through. WebOS 2.0 will expand upon the card scheme of the original OS, but will introduce “stacking” into the mix. This will enable groups of cards to be kept in piles related to one another in order to minimize clutter and maximize efficiency. For instance, if you go to open a link in your Facebook app, it will become stacked within that group, and can be arranged and sorted as you please. Developers will even find that their applications will automatically be grouped by Stacks, requiring them to make no special changes to their applications.

iTunes 10 now available

Earlier at today’s fall music event, Steve Jobs announced that iTunes 10 would be available today. Well, it took them a while—close to ten hours in fact—but it’s finally available for download. As we mentioned earlier, iTunes 10 features the Ping social network, cheaper TV show rentals, improved iPhone/iPad/iPod syncing, and AirPlay support. You can download it now.

Apple says iPod touch outsells Sony and Nintendo combined. What?

Looks as if Apple is gunning for a spot in the gaming realm, or rather has already sliced out their piece of the pie. Sony previously attacked Apple during a PSP commercial where “Marcus” told a kid playing games on an iPhone that it was made for “texting your grandmother” and not for “big boy” games. Steve Jobs retaliated earlier today at the company fall music event by revealing that both Nintendo and Sony’s portable systems are under the sales of the iPod touch alone, and that over 1.5 billion “games and entertainment” apps have been downloaded, big boy games or not.
However, the Nintendo DS reportedly sold 132 million units world wide, while Apple is tracked at 120 million iOS units sold according to their July report. Is Apple trying to pull the wool over gamers eyes, or do they really have the numbers to back up their bold claim? We’re looking into it, as a bit of clarification seems to be in order.
Apple reveals iTunes 10 with Ping social network

Apple announced that iTunes 10 is available today at their fall music event, and they’ve overhauled the old logo as well, eliminating the CD. The biggest news of iTunes 10, however, comes in the form of Ping, a social network along the lines of Last.fm. With Ping, iTunes 10 will allow you to follow people in similar fashion to Twitter, and add friends with compatible tastes in music. In addition, you will be able to comment on peoples pages, and have access to custom songs and album charts, and over 17,000 concert listings. Look for Ping to also grace your iPhone and iPod touch inside the iTunes app. Check out the press release after the jump.

Epic Citadel teases Unreal Engine on iOS

Compatible with iPhone 4 and 3GS, 3rd and 4th gen iPod touch, and the iPad; the Unreal Engine tech demo, dubbed Epic Citadel, lets gamers explore a castle interface with all the bells and whistles of the Unreal Engine. Such as: bump offset mapping, real time lighting, texture mapping, global illumination, and more. Epic citadel was created in eight weeks and can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

iPod nano redesign: Multitouch, tiny, $149 8GB, $179 16GB

In addition to all the other news coming out of Apple’s fall music event, the company announced a complete redesign of the iPod nano. The click-wheel is gone, as is a lot of the display size, as Apple instead focused on making this thing more like an iPod shuffle with a multitouch display. The new nano is 46% smaller and 42% lighter than the previous model, and while it gains multitouch and what appears to be a modified version of iOS, it loses the video camera (of course, if you want an iPod with a video camera, the new iPod touch meets that need.) Apple says the battery on the nano will provide 24 continuous hours of audio playback, and the device is available in seven colors. You can get the 8GB model for $149, or the 16GB nano for $179. Pre-orders are live now, and they ship in a week.

Apple announces new Apple TV with cheap content rentals, Netflix

This morning Apple announced their new update to the Apple TV platform at their fall music event. Since the launch of the Apple TV in 2006, Apple has always maintained that the device and platform were just a “hobby.” With today’s update at the fall music event the focus was on bringing Hollywood movies and TV shows to the device, offering everything in HD, and lowering prices on the content. The new device is 75% smaller, and there’s really not much more to say about the actual hardware. However, the changes that most would care about are on the software and service side of things. HD television show rentals are now just $0.99, which is $2 cheaper than they used to be. You can also rent high definition movies, on the day and date that they are available on DVD, for $4.99. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you can use the Apple TV to access your Instant Queue as well.The device focuses on streaming rather than syncing, and will be available at the end of September, in about four weeks. You can pre-order one today for $99.

At this morning’s Apple event, Steve Jobs introduced the fourth generation iPod touch. As expected, the iPod touch has been updated to pretty much match what we’ve seen with the iPhone 4. That means it has a Retina Display, as well as dual cameras. A
camera on the back that takes images at 960x720, and a VGA camera on front—yup, that means that the new iPod touch is now FaceTime-compatible. The device is available in three sizes: 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299, and a 64GB model for $399. They’ll be available next week, but you can pre-order starting today.
