Google TV review
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Google, Home Entertainment, Product Reviews, Software

Google launched into the TV arena last month with their very own platform, Google TV. With it, they hope to compete with the likes of Apple TV, Roku, and of course, your cable connection. Unlike its competitors however, they haven't made a hardware device, but instead a platform which device makers can integrate into boxes which you connect to your TV, or into TVs themselves. This platform boosts to bring the best of the web and TV together, into a system where you can add features, search for shows and do so much more. But does this Google TV deliver?

Hearing the “pluck” of an achievement is a joy to some, but to others, that little achievement sound is a rush similar to sky diving on cocaine. As gamers, we’ve all been there - slightly obsessed with getting all the achievements for a particular game. But, for achievement hunter and stay at home mother Kristen, one full game of achievements wasn’t enough.
"I wanted to get to 200,000, so I started playing some cheesy kid games," said Kristen. Playing games in this manner to get achievements is called “boosting” by some, and now that Kristen reached her goal of 200,000 she plans to cut back a whole lot.
"I've been gaming for so long, I'll never quit - I'll probably keep gaming until I'm 70. But as far as achievements, I plan to cut back a lot now," said Kristen. “Now that I've hit it, I can't wait to just play Black Ops."
Kristen seems to have gotten over her achievement addiction, but only time will tell if she can stop from going on achievement benders this holiday season.

Japanese phones have been described lately as suffering from “Galapagos Syndrome”. This term comes from Darwin’s discovery that species in the Galapagos Islands seemed to evolve separately from the rest of the world. As such, Japanese smartphones have been criticized for not being accessible to the western market. The upcoming 3D phone from Sharp, ironically called the Galapagos, hopes to change the impression of Japanese smartphones in western minds.
The Sharp Galapagos is powered by Android, and includes a 3.8 inch glasses-free 3D screen set to rival the stereoscopic 3D of Nintendo’s 3DS. What’s more, the Galapagos is set to receive seven games at launch, such as: Resident Evil: Degeneration, Mobile Powerful Pro Baseball 3D, Mega Man, Taiko no Tatsujin, SLIPHEED Alternative, Ghost ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights, and Reikai Denwa. In addition to video games, the Galapagos will also be getting 3D movies like Shrek Forever After and Battle Royale 3D.
However, the Nintendo 3DS is much more powerful graphic-wise than the Sharp Galapagos, as is the iPhone 4 graphically. Though, this is definitely a great phone for mobile gaming in 3D without glasses.

DARPA is looking to get their hands on soldiers minds from the outside in, by using a gadget that installs in the helmet to regulate things such as alertness, cognition, pain, and psychiatric well-being.
William Tyler, a neuroscientist from Arizona State University has been working with funds from the Army Research Laboratory for several years, and his work has caught the eye of DARPA.
The mind-control device basically works through a “transcranial pulsed ultrasound” method to stimulate brain circuits from outside of the skull. This is much more convenient than other deep-brain approaches that require invasive surgery to implant electrodes and the like. Furthermore, the technology has proven capable of penetrating deep brain regions, and can zero in on specific brain zones as small as two millimeters.
The device fits snugly into a soldiers helmet and is controlled by a microcontroller. The ultrasound of the device stimulates different brain regions to improve soldier alertness and cognition, and relieve stress and pain, and other traumatic brain injuries.
We’re not too far off from a Metal Gear Solid universe after all.

Sonic Colors celebration in New York City
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Adventure, Culture, SEGA, Wii

Sega seems to be quite happy with Sonic Colors, and plans to celebrate in New York City this evening, from 6pm to 10pm in Bryant Park with an ice skating party and free hedgehog hats. If you are among the first 300 people to arrive at Sonic Colors launch part at Citi Pond in Bryant Park then you will be able to keep your head warm in Sonic style with a free Sonic the Hedgehog hat.
Furthermore, the same 300 attendees will get to skate for free, and as a bonus to make things seem extremely cheesy, will get to skate to the Sonic Colors theme song - “Reach For The Stars”, awesome!

Silent Hill returns to theaters in new 3D film
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Movies, Video Games

Silent Hill is returning to theaters, but this time with a Michael J. Bassett penned script instead of Roger Avary. The flick will be based off one of the more popular Silent Hill games, Silent Hill 3, revolving around Heather Mason and her search for her father.
The official synopsis of the film reads: "For years, Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn't fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever."
Also, this Silent Hill film looks to take advantage of the 3D craze, and inject a little more stereoscopic into your life (as if you needed anymore).

Microsoft Kinect NYC launch event
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Microsoft, Video Games, Videos

Microsoft launched their new Kinect motion sensor at midnight last night in New York City at the Toys R Us in Times Square, and the scene looked quite unreal. Streets were blocked off, long lines could be seen, and dancers wearing "You are the controller" t-shirts entertained the crowd. Overall, the launch appears to have gone smoothly and thousands of people are now discovering this new way to game on their Xbox 360 consoles. If you weren't part of the midnight crowd, you can still get yours for $149 at your local gaming store. For now, check out the video after the jump from one of the many who were outside in the mob.

Table Connect multi-touch iPhone desk is awesome
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Accessories, Apple, Videos
Ever wanted to play beer pong on an iPhone? No, we mean literally, on an iPhone? Apparently, the folks down at TableConnect did, and imagined their vision to life by using a dedicated app on a jailbroken iPhone and a 58-inch multi-touch table. The end result is a table that replicates the iPhone display. The table works surprisingly fast and allows for all the typical hand gestures to work, such as swiping and pinching. Hit that play button above for a look at it.

Several Chrome OS notebooks coming for the holidays
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Google, PC / Laptop, Rumors

DigiTimes yesterday reported that several vendors have plans to bring Google's Chrome OS to some of their devices as early as this holiday season. Sources say that Google will have its own branded Chrome notebook by the end of this month, with HP and Acer following in December. It's apparently an attempt by the device makers to test the waters. Chrome OS is Google's way to make a device that's more web centric, with little to no on-board applications, and all your data residing in the cloud.
It's worth noting that Google is now playing in this field with two different operating systems: Android and Chrome OS. With Android being an obvious success in the smartphone market, and coming out on many tablets these days, I for one am skeptical as to the marketshare a device based on Chrome OS can gather.
