Today Core Design disappointed Tomb Raider fanboys worldwide today when they formally announced that Lara Croft won’t be coming to the PSP.  Core Design confirmed that latest Lara Croft adventure had been in progress, but a recent assessment by SCi Entertainment, the new owner of Edios, called for the project to be cancelled.  The game was set to be a remake of the original Tomb Raider called Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition.  1Up raises a good point by questioning the decision to scrap Tomb Raider while Edios went ahead with Reservoir Dogs the Game. Many fans of Lara will miss this remake

port, but the PSP needs another port like Duke Nukem Forever needs another delay.

PSP Vending Machine

Buying new video game systems is always an experience that gets your heart racing - the thrill of removing the shrink wrap, the joy of getting your first fingerprints on the glossy exterior. Well, now you can have all the excitement of getting a PSP without the pesky nuisance of actually dealing with people. According to twice.com, Sony is test-marketing a series of “Sony Access” vending machines that will sell items such as PSPs, video games, MP3 players, and digital cameras.

Three trial machines were recently placed in malls in Georgia, Colorado, and California, with more to follow (assuming they’re successful.) Fortunately, you don’t have to pay with hundreds of singles…the machine accepts both debit and credit cards and will automatically cancel your order if something goes wrong.

Loco Roco Bundle

Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan announced that they will be releasing two limited edition PSP bundles, including their new game Loco Roco. The bundle will include a copy of the game, a 32 MB memory card, AC adapter, and the choice of either the ceramic white or black PSP for 24,800 Yen. A decent enough deal considering that the core PSP without memory card runs 19,800 Yen, and the Loco Roco will retail for 4,800 Yen. In addition to the PSP bundle, Sony is releasing a limited edition Loco Roco themed PSP carrying case, at 1,575 Yen, about $13.

With the online available flash demos, and these special bundles, it appears Sony is trying to get more casual gamers to approach the PSP, aping somewhat the success path of the Nintendo DS. Considering that at some points, the DS has outsold the PSP at ratios of 5:1 and greater, Sony must try something to gain market-share in Japan. In the US, the markets are much closer, though with the release of the DS Lite and Nintendo’s “Touch Generations” campaign, things might shift into Nintendo’s favor. At this point, however, with Sony running neck and neck with Nintendo of America, it is unlikely that gamers will see such bundles and special offers in this territory.

It’s always sad to see that one of the top game makers out there can’t turn a profit…even with hits like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Grand Theft Auto, Take2 has taken a profit hit this quarter, which probably has to do with some of the recent FTC hullaballoo. However, there was some good news in Take2’s earning reports, including the announcement of a second PSP title in development, in addition to the already-mentioned Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. Straight from the press release:

Additional products planned for 2006 from Rockstar Games include Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for the PSP, scheduled for October release, an additional PSP title based on another premier brand, and Bully.

Shoplifter Mark Empire RecordsLast night a Myrtle Beach man stole 60 games from a local Blockbuster in one trip.  Store employees spotted the individual stuffing PSP games into his pants around 8:30 PM.  The games are valued at $1,800 or roughly $30 bucks each.  The theft came as a shock to members of the gaming community, many of whom currently believe the PSP has very few titles worth stealing.  Blockbuster has also issued a warning to stores in the area to be on the lookout for any customer who wears baggy pants and waddles as they exit the store.  Someone please send us the security cam footage of this one!

PSP Mod Chip Reports of the first fully open custom BIOS firmware replacement for the PSP has been announced. The so-called Epsilon BIOS supposedly has cracked the PSP encryption methods to allow homebrew and unsigned code full access to the PSP, including running in kernal mode. Firmware revisions up to the latest 2.71 release are supported with this BIOS, and UMD .ISO booting from memory stick is included. The BIOS itself requires an original PSP firmware to operate, so the new release will work only in conjunction with the recently announced Undiluted Platinum modchip. This BIOS, plus the new modchip should allow all homebrew developers full access to the PSP hardware and firmware feature set.

PSP Mod ChipLooks like a PSP mod solution has been announced, and should be shipping soon. This would not be a simple plug-and-play hack, but will instead be more of a firmware management system. This would allow PSP users to run various firmware revisions on their system, facilitating homebrew applications while maintaining the ability to run the latest firmware to support retail games. More information on availability and installation should come in the next few weeks.
