1080p Apple TV

At this mornings iPad event, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the new Apple TV. The new Apple TV set-top box can output 1080p video, and what's even cooler is that the iTunes store has been updated as well, and will now offer movies and TV shows in full 1080p high definition. In addition to the video resolution, the new Apple TV also offers a brand new UI that looks very similar to what you find on your iOS devices, making a lot of the features look more like apps. The new Apple TV will be in stores next week, but you can pre-order it from Apple today for $99.

iPad 3 Retina Display proof

If you were curious if the iPad 3 would ship with a Retina display after all the rumors, well, wonder no more. MacRumors has independently confirmed that the panels that are to be used in the next iPad sport twice the linear resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2, sporting four times as many pixels. The site obtained one of the new panels and put it under a microscope in order to check out the pixel density. The results show that the pixels in the newer display panel are a quarter of the size of the pixels found in previous models.

MacRumors does note that the panels are not directly from Apple, however, they are listed as OEM replacement displays for the iPad 3 and are in mass production. The difficulty in creating 9.7" display panels with a 2048x1536 resolution make this all but obvious that these are for the next iPad.

The studio behind the blockbuster Avatar is offering an unprecedented look into digital filmmaking, with downloadable extras that will allow a viewer to watch the motion capture actors or CGI in real time.

Beginning on Dec. 20, customers can now download a total of six hours of extras via Apple's iTunes from Twentieth Century Fox, which include the three different views of the movie, plus a number of other extras that offer a real-time look into how the movie was made.

The Avatar iTunes Extras Special Edition will cost $19.99 for a high-definition version, and $14.99 for the standard version; both include the movie as well as the extras. Apple will begin accepting preorders at 11 AM PT, a Fox spokeswoman said.

Fox's motivation is to encourage consumers to get into "digital collecting" of digital movies, explained Aubrey Freeborn, senior vice president of marketing and product management for PPV, VOD and EST for Twentieth-Century Fox. The extras will be released to the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia on Dec. 20. Avatar is the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

This is an entry from our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide. Check it out for suggestions on what to buy your loved, liked, and hated ones this holiday season!

TiVo Premiere Elite

Our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide for the day is the TiVo Premiere Elite. What makes this TiVo so much more special than its predecessors? Well, for starters, this thing has four tuners, so it can record up to four different programs at once. You can watch any of the four, or view a fifth already-recorded program, so that's pretty nice. It's also got a 2 TB hard drive in it, which can hold up to 300 hours of HD programming. If you've got someone in your life who loves film and television, but hates those horrible UIs on the cable company DVR, this is the thing to get.

You can pick up a TiVo Elite for $494 on Amazon.
