Virtua Fighter 5 Gaming site Kikizo recently scored an interview with the Virtua Fighter 5 arcade lead and the designer of the PlayStation 3 version of the game, and they were able to discuss a lot about the console adaptation, the future of the franchise, and some of the reasoning behind the design decisions made for the home version of the game. Unfortunately, the two were unable to give any insight into the upcoming Xbox 360 version of the game, but they were able to talk at length about the series. The team doesn’t appear to be considering future downloadable content or microtransactions, but the team seemed open to the possibility of older versions and variants of the Virtua Fighter series becoming available, including Virtua Fighter Kids.

Well, while Tekken: Dark Resurrection was initially promised “this month” by Namco Bandai, February has passed and there is still no sign of the brawler on the PlayStation Store. If IGN’s latest release list is to believed, the game should be available on March 8th, another week out. With Namco Bandai promising basically a straight port of the arcade and Japanese PlayStation Network releases, it seems strange that the US version would see an unexpected delay. One can hope that extra functionality or optimization is being worked into the product, but that would seem to be doubtful at this point.

Update: Looks like IGN was wrong, according to reports, Tekken: Dark Resurrection should hit the PlayStation Network today at 5pm PST, only a mere day late.

Namco Bandai showed off Tekken 6 via trailer at the AOU Arcade show in Japan, and now the same trailer is available for download on the official Tekken 6 Japanese site. The trailer shows off two of the new characters from the latest entry in the fighter franchise, Leo and Zafina, many of the environments, some development clips, and a couple of characters from previous games. Its still a little hard to tell how well this is going to look from the rather low resolution trailer offered, but one can’t help but get excited for the first fully HD entry in the Tekken series. Namco Bandai’s official site also offers up some screenshots and wallpapers for the new characters.

Tekken Dark Resurrection HD

Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the Playstation 3 will officially be available to US customer this month, according to a report on 1up. Namco has not offered any pricing or an exact availability date, but the release time frame will put the game squarely against Sega’s upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 release on February 20th. Of course, the Tekken: Dark Resurrection download will more than likely cost less than half of the retail Virtua Fighter release, which should Namco’s sales. Namco also clarified that the release will not include online battles, but their statement leaves open the possibility that such a feature could be added in the future. North American availability has trailed the Japanese release by almost two months; online gamers have speculated that this might mean additional gameplay modes and content, however, at this time it looks like this is not the case.

Tekken PS3

Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the Playstation 3 has been made available via download through Sony’s Playstation Store in Japan. For 2,000 Yen ($16), gamers can get an HD updated port of Dark Resurrection for the PSP, including support for 1080P. Like the PSP release, it appears the download does not support direct online play, but will support ghost mode updates.

Virtua Fighter 5Sega today announced that their flagship fighter Virtua Fighter 5 would no longer be exclusive to the Playstation 3. While the PS3 version launches in February, Xbox 360 owners will have to wait a few scant months until the Xbox 360 version launches some time in the summer of 2007. The announcement knocks yet another exclusive title off the PS3 list. Full details of the Xbox 360 version have yet to be announced, but one can be sure that when it ships, dedicated devotees of the series will be dissecting both console versions to determine which will be the definitive one.

Virtua Fighter 5Sega’s Virtua Fighter 5 for the Playstation 3 was recently confirmed for release in North America on February 20th, 2007, and 1up was able to talk with members of the AM2 team concerning the console release. The members of the AM2 conversion team were able to confirm that the Playstation 3 version would be based on the version “B” of the game, currently headed to the arcade. The team is hoping to include many of the items available in the arcade version; there are no plans for any kind of micro-transaction support, so these will be locked at launch and will likely trail behind the arcade version. AM2 will also not be supporting any kind of online play; they believe that lag issues will be too difficult to overcome. Given the highly technical devotion to frame counting and timing that many arcade fans have, this would seem to be a reasonable decision. The AM2 team also discusses some of the additional game modes that the console version will support along with rumors of an Xbox 360 version. An Xbox 360 version doesn’t seem likely, but there is some encouragement that AM2 is looking at the platform for other releases.

Street Fighter II1up.com has done a little trolling through the ESRB database and found some interesting titles. Games like Kirby’s Adventure and Kid Icarus appear in the database for the Wii, but a new entry, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is listed. While this title could be for something other than the Virtual Console, this seems unlikely. Hopefully, having Capcom on board will mean that gamers will get to see other classic titles like Bionic Commando.

Wii Sports Baseball ScreenshotIn the bevy of press materials Nintendo sent out today were some tasty tidbits about upcoming games for the Wii. The first one of note is that Wii Sports, which will come as a pack-in game for the $249.99 console, will now feature Wii Boxing(!!) alongside Tennis, Baseball, Golf, and Bowling.

Straight from the press materials (you read it here first!):

Boxing (1-2 players): Using the Nunchuk controller as one glove and the Wii Remote as the other, players dodge, weave and punch their opponents. Players hold their hands high to guard their faces or low to block their torsos. They punch high to hit their opponents’ faces or low to get under their guard for a body blow. Swing both arms left or right to sidestep oncoming blows and move into position for a devastating knockout.

Sounds very cool! Maybe EA will pick up on what an intuitive play mechanic this is and bring Fight Night to the Wii? Wii can only hope!
