It's October, and that means that there are many people looking for a great Halloween costume. Rather than buying a cheap costume-in-a-bag, why not get creative and build something awesome? Last year, my family took the time to build our own Halloween costumes from scratch. We chose LEGO Superheroes, and It was a daunting task. We put in the time, though, and in the end, we had some amazing costumes when it was time to party. We're working on our full tutorial of how you can build your own LEGO Superhero costume like ours, and you don't even have to be Batman, Spider-Man, or Supergirl--this works for any character you can think of! While we put the finishing touches on that one, why not check out our LEGO Superhero Halloween costume gallery, where we captures each step of the process?

Nest Learning Thermostat

You may have seen our videos of Nest, the learning thermostat that aims to change home heating and cooling. If you haven't, check out our Nest thermostat unboxing and Nest thermostat installation video. It's been about a year since Nest launched, and Tony Fadell and company haven't been resting on their laurels. Instead, the company has just announced the next version of the Nest Learning Thermostat. What's changed? Well, the new model is noticeably thinner, doing away with the front ring wheel and instead incorporating it into the body of the thermostat. It also works much a much wider array of heating and cooling technologies, as well as whole home humidifiers.

If you own an Android tablet, you'll be happy to know that Nest has finally made an app available to control the device remotely, while the existing iOS and Android apps are seeing updates to support all the new hotness. You can pre-order the new Nest now for $249, or you can grab the first-generation model for $229. All of the software features that the new model sports are also supported by the older version, so it appears the only difference between the two is the size of the actual device.

In the latest Apple Maps saga, The Verge is reporting some security concerns regarding sensitive military installations that appear on mapping solutions by Apple. as compared to Google Maps and Nokia Maps. The picture being portrayed is that Apple is showing more information than the other companies. While it may appear accurate on the surface, it lacks transparency and fairness. Case in point, we all can agree that Area 51 is one of the most secretive government military installations in the world. Coincidentally, or ironically, The Verge failed to report that Google's map offering shows a much more pristine image of Area 51 than Apple's map of that particular base, nor is it pixelated for security. I went out of my way to tweet the author of the post to get an explanation for the discrepancy. There are definitely more examples of similar discrepancies, this isn't limited to just Area 51.

The iPhone 5 is the most beautiful iPhone that Apple has released to date (seriously - check our iPhone 5 review!) Since our review features both the white & silver model and the black & slate model, we've been getting questions about which is "better." The thing is, it's all a matter of opinion, although the black model is a bit more susceptible to scratches and scuffs. Since some people don't have an Apple Store nearby where they can check out the two color options for themselves, we've put together an iPhone 5 White vs. Black photo gallery. Check it out, as we have a bunch of comparison shots for your perousal. Let us know what you decide!

iPhone 5 hardware teardown

The folks over at iPhone Garage got ahold of an iPhone 5 smartphone a little early, and they've given it the teardown treatment. It's nowhere near as the iFixIt iPhone 5 teardown that we're sure we'll see tomorrow, but it's still a glimpse inside the new, slim architecture that Apple has spent years perfecting. Hit the source link for more images. The iPhone 5 officially launches tomorrow.

iPhone 5 schematics

Apple is offering third-party case manufacturers precise blueprint schematics of the iPhone 5 to ensure they are able to make well-fitting cases and accessories. However, antsy case makers went ahead and made them based on leaked information obtained from iPhone distributors and manufacturers; some going as far as using 3D mockups of speculated designs. We are not sure if this is the first time that Apple has gone out of its way to accommodate case makers, but it sure is welcoming to see that users can play dress up without having to ask "does this case make my iPhone's butt look big?".

SOL REPUBLIC Tracks HD Anthem Michael Phelps

We love us some SOL Republic here at Gear Live. They sound great, look great, and are super customizable. Now, the company is set to release the SOL Republic Tracks HD Anthem edition, which are inspired by Michael Phelps.  If you watched the summer 2012 Olympics, you probably caught footage of Phelps rocking a bunch of different pairs ot SOL Republic headphones prior to each of his races. These are just a custom-designed version of the standard Tracks HD headphones, but expect to pay $149.99 for the Anthem edition, a $20 premium over the standard Tracks HD. We've got one more image after the jump.

Apple Yerba Buena design

With a burst of imagination and a little deciphering, a MacRumors forum member uncovered that the Yerba Buena Gardens decor, being prepared for the big iPhone 5 reveal, are stretched out iOS app icons.

Apple enthusiasts are theorizing that this is a subliminal Apple marketing message hinting at a stretched, or elongated, iPhone 5. This is, hands down, the biggest tech news of the year. So, why not join in the hysteria?

Nokia Fatboy charger

We're looking forward to the arrival of the Nokia Lumia 920, and one of the main reason is its wireless charging feature (and in case you missed it, we've listed the five reasons you should be excited about the Lumia 920.) The Lumia 920 packs in Qi charging technology, which means you don't have to deal with proprietary chargers. Our favorite, though, is the Fatboy Recharge Pillow. You simply place your Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia on the pillow, and you maintain a charge. No pricing has been announced just yet.

Is wireless charging a feature you're looking forward to in your next smartphone?
