If you’re a fan of Discovery Channel programming and just can’t get enough of it during the day, Discovery Communications is here to help you via a new daily fix of video webcasts. These webcasts will feature breaking news and relevant information in the areas of science, nature, health, travel, the environment and current affairs. The daily video webcasts will be available through a variety of Discovery’s Web sites, including their Discovery Channel News as well as their recently launched broadband channel Discovery Channel Beyond.

Yahoo looks to have launched a new daily video show which highlights nine interesting and unusual Web find. Dubbed “The 9”, this new show is hosted by Maria Sansone. Sansone, MediaWeek reports, is a “mtvU VJ and part time CBS reporter”.
Notes on The 9’s Web site promise to “find the 9 best, weirdest and funniest photos, sites, stories and videos on the ‘net”. The show, which is shot in New York, allows users to vote on their favorite story for the day and also submit Web links for possible use as the “Pepsi 10th”.

Dialing Home With the Vonage V-Phone

Vonage has an interesting looking gadget out today in the form of a USB keychain drive. The new Vonage V-Phone is priced at $39.99 and looks to be available now.
The Vonage V-Phone comes with what Vonage feels is everything one needs to make and receive calls over a high speed Internet connection. Its primary features include coming pre-loaded with Vonage Talk software, having a detachable stereo earpiece microphone, offering 250MB of usable portable memory storage and offering a new Vonage phone number.
The Vonage V-Phone is plugged into any existing USB port on a PC. After also plugging in the earpiece microphone into the side of V-Phone, one is pretty much ready to use the service. When the drive is removed, all of the information is still on it and not the former host computer.

D-Link Introduces 3G Wireless Webcam

D-Link’s newest webcam is fairly typical is many regards. It supports 802.11b/g and 10/100 Ethernet, has low light sensitivity down to 0.5 lux, and offers up to 640x480 resolution at 30fps. What does set it apart is its built in web server that allows you to directly connect and view streaming video from your 3G enabled cell phone or handheld device. Since the camera connects to the Internet through your home/work network, it’s only limited by your 3G service area.
The DCS-2120 is equipped with a 1/4-inch CMOS sensor, and while that isn’t as good as other webcams that may have CCD’s, it should be more than adequate for the task at hand. Other features include software which allows you to monitor up to sixteen webcams, 4x digital zoom, a motion-sensor mode that only records when movement is sensed, and a snapshot feature.

Netgear Goes 200Mbps Powerline with Adapter, Kit

Netgear today debuted a 200Mbps powerline solution for HD video and gaming. The new 200 Mbps Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter (HDX101) and Kit (HDXB101) are priced at $129.99 and $249.99 respectively and look to be available now.
The HDX101, according to Netgear, turns an AC outlet into a high-speed Ethernet broadband connection capable of supporting real-time video, gaming and VoIP. It is designed based on powerline technology from DS2, a supplier of 200Mbps technology. The HDX101 also has built-in technology for helping to prioritize gaming and video signals above other network traffic so they are reportedly more consistent and free of interruption.
Like any powerline solution, two adapters are needed to make the connection work. Netgear’s HDXB101 includes two HDX101 adapters, an Ethernet cable and a setup CD.

Dell Latitude D420 Offers 7 Hours Of Battery Life

Today Dell introduced the Latitude D420, designed to succeed their Latitude X1 as the company’s premier ultraportable notebook. While slightly heaver and larger than the X1, the D420 offers more features and options like a D-family docking port, optional integrated broadband (HSDPA or EVDO), an optional biometric fingerprint reader, greater memory capacity (1.5GB), a PC Card slot (Type I and II), and dual-core processors which will be available later this summer.
Dell claims over seven hours of battery life on the D420, but be aware that their testing was performed not with the base 4-cell battery, but the optional 9-cell battery which adds almost one-half pound to the total weight. Still, a 3.5 pound notebook that can operate for around seven hours is nothing to be ashamed of.
The most notable absence on the D420 is the lack of an optical drive, a trait shared with the X1. However, as if to reward us for good behavior, the new model comes with a much needed PC Card slot which was sorely lacking on the X1.
The Latitude D420 is available now and pricing starts at $1,149 USD.

Verizon Offering Treo 700p

For those haters that wanted a new Treo, but weren’t feeling Windows Mobile, you can finally snap up the Treo 700p from Verizon starting on June 1. The 700p runs the Palm OS and runs for $499 USD with a $100 rebate, winding up at $399. Of course, if you want to actually use the phone, you are gonna have to keep paying, as $80 per month is the cheapest plan offered for the smartphone, which hooks you up with unlimited EVDO usage (good!) but just 450 minutes of talk time per month (bad!). Still, this is a phone that we expect the business types to migrate towards, so the lure of unlimited data is where it’s at.

Sony Unleashes The VAIO UX Micro PC

Although I still believe that UMPC devices will remain a niche market, similar to that of the Tablet PC, they do have potential. One of the biggest drawbacks to them is the lack of a physical keyboard and that’s where Sony’s newest variation of their U Series VAIO, the UX Micro PC, has a leg up on the competition. Naturally, Sony is eschewing the whole UMPC moniker and continuing to do their own thing, but the UX Micro doesn’t lack for features because of that. Crammed into its tiny enclosure (150.2 x 95 x 38.2mm closed) is a 4.5” XBrite touchscreen LCD with a 1024x600 resolution, an Intel Core Solo ULV processor running at 1.06GHz, an itty-bitty keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, EDGE, USB 2.0, a MemoryStick Duo slot, a CompactFlash slot, a folding antenna,
twocameras and a biometric fingerprint sensor. If that’s not enough, a docking station is included that tacks on three more USB ports, FireWire, Ethernet, VGA output, and an A/V port. There’s got to be a kitchen sink in there somewhere.
It all comes at a price though, and a painful one at that - $1,800 USD when it becomes available in July.
SlingPlayer Mobile Now Available

The Slingbox just gets better and better with each new update, and the gang at Sling Media have finally released SlingPlayer Mobile. Unlike streaming media options offered by Verizon, Sprint and Cingular, there’s no recurring monthly fees (aside from the data plan), and you can watch exactly what you want to. The software works on PocketPC and Windows Mobile 5 devices, with the exception of Windows Smartphones. SlingPlayer Mobile for Smartphones will be released in the 2nd Quarter of 2006.
For proper operation a minimum of 112Kbps sustained incoming bandwidth is required. Beyond that just about any type of Internet connection will do, including WiFi, USB, Bluetooth, EV-DO and UMTS. EDGE may not quite make the grade as its advertised speeds range form 80-130Kbps, so your mileage may vary.
SlingPlayer Mobile is available for purchase at $29.99 USD unless of course you qualify to get it free. To obtain a free license you must have purchased and registered your SlingPlayer prior to April 26, 2006.

SAMBA 75 - USB GPRS/EDGE Modem

We talked about the SAMBA 3G CDMA/EV-DO modem almost exactly one year ago, yet there’s no indication that it ever saw the light of day. What did get released was the SAMBA 75, a quad band GPRS/EDGE USB modem that fills a need, but falls a bit short of 3G glory. It’s been out for a while now, but doesn’t exactly carry a high profile, which is really a shame. When you look at the number of laptops that have eschewed CardBus in favor of ExpressCard, or that lack a PC card slot altogether, there’s definitely a market for a product of this nature.
A quick peek at the basic specifications doesn’t reveal anything out of the ordinary.
