Steve Jobs Keynote Speech

The fascinating relationship/rivalry between Microsoft and Apple was ratcheted up a notch this week. At Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference, CEO Steve Jobs announced their Apple-exclusive web browser, Safari, will be released for Windows XP and Vista—and will be up to twice as fast as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2. The move is seen as part of Jobs’ business strategy to broaden Apple’s presence in the browser market, of which they only have 5 percent, compared to Microsoft’s whopping 80 percent. Curious? A test version of the browser is available at Apple’s web site. This writer will give Safari a test run with Windows Vista and report back soon…

WWDC 2007 keynote is set to deliver another of his hypnotizing keynote speeches this morning from the 2007 Worldwide Developers Conference. We are here to bring you live notes, thoughts and commentary on all Steve has to say about the future of and it’s products. Let’s jump in, as things are getting started:

  • After another “I’m a PC, I’m a Mac” skit, Steve takes the stage and begins to give us a few WWDC 2007 numbers. There are over 5,000 attendees at the event this year, which makes it the biggest ever. There are over 950,000 Apple Developer Connection members.
  • We have just realized that the Apple Store has just gone down. New products for us today?
  • Steve talks about the transition to Intel, and how seamless and fantastic it all has been. Intel CEO Paul Otellini hits the stage to accept a shiny award disc from Steve, and says a few words which can all be summed up by saying that Intel has enjoyed working with Apple. Steve says he is proud of the Macs they are shipping with Intel chips inside them.

iPenguin

Sega seems to be intent on creating an entire iMenagerie of iPets. First it was the iDog, then the iFish, now the iPenguin. It has the usual flashing LED in its tummy, a speaker in the back of its head, a mini-plug for headphones, and a nose sensor. At a size of 3.56 x 3.54 x 4.72-inches,  it needs 3 AAA batteries (not included.) You can pre-register for your very own iPenguin which is due out on July 26 for $59.00. from Sega, then play it a rousing John Philip Sousa tune from your iPod.

IncipioHitchWe are constantly trying to decide whether to use our extra USB port for downloading more music to our iPod or keeping our infra-red mouse hooked up. The IncipioHitch connects to the Apple sync and charge port on a second generation nano and converts it to a simple USB. The gadget is available in black or white for $14.99, but you can also get a Limited Edition Zebra from IncipioHitch soon. We’re all in favor of anything that can make our cords a bit less chaotic behind our PCs. As it is, we are almost too scared to look back there.

MiuroSome time ago we introduced you to Miuro, a playtoy for your iPod, and now its newest generation has arrived. This one not only boogies, it does so spontaneously instead of having to be pre-programmed with software that is based on what is referred to as “chaotic itinerancy.” This means that instead of you instructing your Miuro to dance, it can probably teach you a few steps.

ZMP President Hisashi Taniguchi says that the bot uses algorithms to analyze and translate beats into dancing the way that bees move around flowers. He is hoping that someday Miuro will be the “ultimate virtual pet” which will feature built-in sensors that can seek you out and play you a tune, whether you want it to or not. The release date has yet to be determined, but it will only be available in Japan at start up. Do you suppose that if we let it play “Achy Breaky Heart,” it could teach us to line dance?
