Apple TV

Apple has decided to postpone the launch of Apple TV until mid-March because, as spokesperson Lynn Fox explains, “Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected.”

The gadget is designed to move digital content from a computer to a TV via a HDMI port or component video and audio ports. The company is counting on profits from those with puny monitors and gimongous plasma screens to download movies from its iTunes. Originally due out this month, the unit will retail for $299.00 and is compatible with both Mac and PC. We suppose that if they need to “wrap it up” a while longer, we can wait to unwrap it.

iPod 5G The iPod’s bid for world domination continues at a frenetic pace. Last week we reported how major airlines will be offering iPod seat connectivity by mid-year, but low-cost Mexican airline Volaris leap-frogged the competition this month by purchasing a stash of 30 GB 5G iPods and loaning them to fliers for free. After the test-run, the customers can rent the players for only 50 pesos ($5 USD). The devices are pre-loaded with music and Mexican programming, which will be expanded to include U.S. sitcoms and additional music genres. We’e thinking an ingenious someone at Volaris is getting a promotion right about now…

SendStation iPod Dock ConnectorSometimes it’s the simplest invention that yields the greatest convenience. What inspired this profundity? The SendStation Dock Extender, a small device that lets you plug your iPod into its docking station (or iPod speaker system), while still in its case or skin! Using a removable support and one of three interchangeable caps, you can dock your iPod, regardless of the case or skin it’s in, as long it has a dock connector opening. Works with 3G iPods on up, and even the upcoming iPhone if you’re planning ahead. The Dock Extender will be available soon, with price still to be determined.

As I was Twittering, Software Update popped up and notified me that there is a WWAN Support Update available. What does this mean? Since I am posting from a MacBook Pro, it means that Apple is adding support in OS X for even more cards for hopping online. Included are a bunch of Novatel products, like the Novatel Merlin XU870 ExpressCard (HSDPA) for Cingular, and the V740 ExpressCard for Verizon that supports EVDO Rev. A. The full message is below:

The WWAN Support Update v1.0 provides SW support for the following WWAN products:

Available on the Cingular network:

  • Novatel Merlin XU870 ExpressCard (HSDPA)

Available on the Sprint network:

  • Novatel Wireless Merlin EX720 Express Card (EVDO Rev. A)
  • Novatel Wireless Ovation U720 USB Modem (USB Adapter, EVDO Rev. A)

Available on the Verizon network:

  • Novatel XV620 ExpressCard (EVDO Rev. 0)
  • Novatel V740 ExpressCard (EVDO Rev. A)

If you’re on a Mac notebook, rev up Software Update for the download.

iPod 5G As if iPods weren’t ubiquitous enough (and we mean that in a good way), by mid-year select airlines will have iPod seat connections that will keep your little buddy powered and charged during the flight. Even better, using the dock connector port, you will be able to display the video content from the iPod on seat-back screens. It’s all about synergy, as many airlines are currently improving and increasing their in-flight entertainment options. Apple is currently working with Delta, US Airlines, United, Continental, and others, with even more airlines on the horizon.
