With the recent surge of traffic, we saw the need for a forum solution that was stronger and more robust than the phpBB system that we had been using. Now, after a few weeks of stress testing, the new and improved Gear Live Forums are ready to rock and roll. What has changed? Well, basically the entire forum is completely integrated into the main site. An example of this is that all Gear Live member accounts now tie in to the forum. No need for a separate login, separate password, etc. You can manage everything from within one control panel. Even cooler, we can now integrated posts from here to the forums. Select posts will have a “Discuss on our forums” link at the bottom of them which leads you directly to a discussion on that post. If you have used our forum system before, be sure to update your bookmark. We love version 2.0.

Just a quick heads up - despite beefing up our servers a few months ago, it seems that the need has arisen again. That being the case, we will be upgrading our servers, as as such, there is a possibility that we may experience a bit of downtime. Of course, we will make it as short as possible, if it has to be that way at all.

Chris Cardinal on Gear LiveHey there. My name is Chris Cardinal and I’ll be bringing you hilarious, tech-centric diatribes that use far-too-large words that I sometimes use to make me feel better about myself. In all seriousness, I had a five month stint at Gizmodo and met Andru at E3 this year, where he was none-too-impressed by the sheer coolness the Gizmodo crew brought with them. And our reprehensible egos. Regardless, I dig all things tech - so much so that I own and manage a web apps development company (shameless plug) and occasionally listen to MP3s on my computer. (Which, I’m aware, does little to prove the previous statement.) I hope you’ll find my crazy style of writing something this side of adorable instead of blatantly obnoxious, but beggars can’t be choosers. (By the way, in the pic you see, I’m the one on the left.)

Omega Bundle GiveawayAs a reminder, if you haven’t already entered our Omega Giveaway, you should go and do that now. The winner, chosen at random, will walk away with a $2,000 Xbox 360 bundle. That includes the Xbox 360 Premium bundle, 20 games, and a ridiculous amount of accessories. It really doesn’t get much better than that. All you need to do is let us know which game in the bundle you are looking forward to most, and which you are looking forward to least. Once you do that, you are in the running. Wanna enter? Click here.

Hurricane Katrina ReliefOkay ladies and germs, time to take a time out to address something of grave importance. There are people in our country who are in desperate need of some help. We have seen a disaster of epic proportions sweep over the Gulf of Mexico, leaving cities in ruins. If you have been watching the news and are wondering how you can help, the Red Cross is ready and willing to take your funds and put them to good use. If you want to get something out of it, Bungie is selling Halo 2 Gamer T-Shirts for $20, and $15 of that cash goes straight to the Red Cross. In addition, if you have a website, I urge you to place the Hurricane Katrina relief “dog ear” on it. Big props to Brian Alvey for coming up with the design, and thanks to Jason Calacanis for trying to spread the word. We will be implementing the graphic on Gear Live, Playfeed, and The Andru Edwards Weblog.

Omega Bundle GiveawayOkay, so I was discussing Gamestop’s ridiculously amazing, and horrendously overpriced Xbox 360 Omega Bundle on The Chris Pirillo Show last week. Before the end of the segment, Chris had convinced me to give one of these monsters away here on Gear Live. Thank him, because this is what we are giving away:

360 Premium Pack ($399.00): Xbox 360 Game Console, Wireless Controller, Combination High-Definition Component & Standard A/V Cable, 20GB Hard Drive, Ethernet Cable, Headset, Universal Media Remote, Xbox Live Silver, Xbox Live Gold 30-Day Trial
Omega Bundle Games: Perfect Dark Collector’s Edition, Project Gotham Racing 3, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Dead or Alive 4, Call of Duty 2, GUN, Quake 4, Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland, Condemned, Madden NFL 2006, Kameo, Amped 3, Ghost Recon, NBA 2K6, NHL 2K6, Ridge Racer 6, Top Spin 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Tiger Woods 2006, Frame City Killer
Omega Bundle Accessories: Extra Wireless Controller, Extra Wireless Controller, Extra Wireless Controller, Wireless Network Adaptor, Memory Unit, Fuego Faceplates, Play & Charge Kit, Rechargeable Battery, Xbox Live 12 Month Card, 1-Year Product Replacement Plan

This contest starts now, and will end a week before Xbox 360 launch. Here is how it will go down. In order to enter, you need to be a registered user on the site, and must place your mailing address in the signup form in the Sync Magazine box. No worries, as your address will only be used to mail you your Bundle, and send you a Sync subscription if you check that box. Once this is done, be sure you are logged in and leave a comment here in this post. What we want to know is the following:

1) Which game are you looking forward to the most in this bundle?
2) Which game are you looking forward to the least in this bundle?

Be sure to tell us why you are excited about (or not looking forward to) the games you choose. The winner will be someone who follows the instructions, and will be chosen at random. Once again, this one is only for those located in the good ol’ USA. There you have it. Someone is about to be buried in Xbox 360 games.

CordsterEvery once in a while someone makes a product so simple yet brilliant that you kind of have to wonder why you didn’t think it up and make your fortune with it. Cordster is a simple elevated disc with some uber-velcro (called Dual Lock) attached to it to make it easy to attach the bottom plate to your MP3 player, mobile phone, or CD player, then snap on the Cordster for when you want to wrap up most or all of your cord. The Cordster has a number of notches spread around the outside of the elevated disc thus making securing your cord wrap at any point a cinch. I know that every day I get my headphone cords tangled, knotted, twisted, and caught on all sorts of annoying things swirling around my life - but no longer as our hat’s off to youcordster and problem solved. Cordster is particularly cool at such a great price - under $5 for one, or 5 for under $15!

Gear Live Chris Pirillo ShowEven more audio love for Gear Live editors this week. A few days ago we let you know that Edwin was on the David Lawrence Show to discuss how Google Maps got him out of his traffic ticket fiasco. That same day, I was on The Chris Pirillo show where I also discussed Google Maps, along with the Tom Bihn Brain Cell, the Sony PSP, and a bunch of other tech and gadget stories. Read on for links to download the audio, of you can subscribe to The Chris Pirillo Show via iTunes.

Linux ServerSo yeah, over the past few days Gear Live may have been up or down for you at any given moment. Ever since we posted that Google Maps Traffic Ticket , we were Digg’d, BoingBoing’d, Slashdotted, and every other internet phrase you can think of. The result was that our Pentium II 166 Mhz with MMX Technology was transformed into a pile of sticky ooze. Luckily, we were able to get things moved to a much stronger server with a couple of Xeon’s in it, and all should now be well. Go ahead, tell your friends.

On July 21st, Edwin was on The David Lawrence Show,  a radio show that is centered around pop-culture.  The topic at hand was Google Maps effect on my traffic ticket and the story behind it. You can read a small overview and listen to the one-hour segment for a whopping twenty-five cents, or you can check out the 10 minute podcast for free.  Thanks David, I had a great time.
