UK To Make FM MP3 Adapters Legal
Brits cruising around the UK by car who want to jam to iPod tunes may be in luck as Communications regulator Ofcom is considering decriminalizing the use of FM MP3 adapters. The issue stems from a provision in the The Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949 which forbids the use of radio equipment without a licence. There is no provision for exemption.
Now this doesn’t mean that the British iPod crowd has been towing the line, as there’s a thriving black market for such items as the iTrip. What it does mean, however, is that from 2007 on, the Queen will be able to regulate the use of said items and collect her share of taxes for the royal coffers.
