TiVo: The Price is Right

TiVo $49.99 After Rebate Circuit CityNo, I am not trying to get you to set the old Bob Barker game show to Season Pass! This is a message for those of you out there who STILL have yet to pick up a DVR because of the price. Although many cable companies are starting to release combo DVR/Cable Tuners, just about anyone will tell you that they aren't as good as TiVo. Now just about anyone can get one, because they are just $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate from Circuit City. I know, mail-in rebates suck - but in this case I think it may be worth it. I mean, who wouldn't want to hit instant replay whenever one of Barker's Beauties hits the screen?

That price is pretty nice! But I must say that buyer beware, you’ll STILL have to pay a monthly service fee to use tivo!

Now, you do have to pay a monthly fee with a DVR from your cable company, but having the tuner built in is a pretty big deal IMO and you don’t have to pay any additional upfront costs (unlike tivo).

Disclaimer: I have a DVR from a cable company and love it smile

Well, everyone.  TiVOs don’t record in HD according to their help line.  What’s that make a show, 520 x 450 lines?  I’d be really tolerant if that was my cellphone resolution, but it’s not a lot of fun to sit on a couch with 12 friends and watch a cellphone.

Now, DirecOne and sattelite PVR/DVRs seem to record in HD, but I don’t want to buy ‘programming’ from people.  I’ll be cracking that eggshell myself, thanks; it’s allowed in your sales terms for the boxen though, right?  And I want to tune OTA (ATSC in the US) stuff….

What, is -that- encrypted?

News -so fair and balanced,- you’ll want to sign our NDA first.
