The Top Ten Things You Need to Know About Sony’s PSP
Sony’s small wonder is coming soon to the States. Already a huge success at it’s Japanese launch earlier this month, the system is so hot that many gamers have resorted to importing it at extravagant prices. Here at Gear Live we’re a little more patient, (okay, maybe just a little more broke) but that hasn’t kept us from finding out all we could about the handheld. Some of the things we’ll share about the PSP you may already know, while others features may be surprising. Whatever the case, be sure you read on to make sure you have the inside scoop on one of the biggest releases early next year.

1) First let’s talk about graphics. The graphical power of the PSP is said to be close to that of a Playstation2. And yet many early screenshots show slightly less complicated character and background models. There’s a reason for why things might appear that way, even though they are more impressive than anything else on the handheld market. It’s because screenshots from a PS2 are full screen and need to be that detailed, whereas the PSP screen is smaller and thus can fool the eye into appearing more powerful than it is on paper. Simply put, the character models don’t need to be as detailed, because you won’t notice the difference anyway. That said, we need to keep in mind that these are first-generation PSP titles. Just look at how the PS2 games have evolved since its launch. If handheld games are looking this good at launch, imagine what a couple years of development time will do. You can expect the same leaps, similar to those found with home based consoles, as developers become more familiar with it.
2) The battery time issue is fixable. Everyone was worried about what kind of battery time we would be looking at with such a powerful system. Well as of now, you can expect even the most intensive games to last well beyond 3 hours of play time, while other less graphically intense games can reach up to 6 hours. Better yet, the system can be charged while you play it, and there will also be swappable batteries available if you find your game time will stretch well past 4 hours in one sitting. As an aside, mp3 playback will be in the realm of 9-10 hours, in large part because you can turn off the screen when the unit is tucked in your pocket. Charging will take about 2 hours from a completely drained battery. You can also play the PSP while charging the battery at the same time. There’s more hope too. Sony has already stated that higher capacity batteries are in the works.
3) Music playback. The PSP will be able to play mp3’s right out of the box. The only supported storage (outside the pre-loaded UMD media) will be Memory Stick Duo’s, which could be found in capacities as large as 1GB, and for about $150 if you look hard enough. Battery life and sound quality have been reported to be pretty good, though you will probably want to use your favorite headphones. Many folks are planning to use the PSP as a secondary mp3 player, for when they grow tired of games while on the road.
4) It’s wireless too. The Nintendo DS has already demonstrated the freedom that can be had without carrying your cords everywhere, or dealing with tangles when trying to hook up with more than one person. The PSP follows suit with a powerful wireless functionality that can work up to 100 feet away, even through walls. Theoretically, you can play against someone else on the far side of the floor you’re on. Add in other players, and you can have 8 people going at it wirelessly without any game lag, as can be seen on the launch title Ridge Racers. And this is just the tip of it all, as future wireless titles can have internet connectivity so that you’re playing with a team of folks that span the globe. In fact, the PSP can already log online, but only for firmware updates, at this point. It’s only a matter of time before a third party releases a web browser UMD.
5) Sleep mode. One of the drawbacks to a disc-based system is load time. To help overcome some of the boot-up and loading time for the PSP, it allows you to put the system on sleep mode with a flick of a button, when you have a short break. Turning it back on will jump you immediately back to the point where you left off in your game, in less than a second. Furthermore, sleep mode has been found to have almost no effect on the battery-life, even after being in sleep for 24 hours. This means you can play in short bursts, experiencing the benefits of disc-based data, but minimizing the load times, if you need to keep it off for a little while.
6) Movie playback. The PSP plays back MP4-formatted movies, right off the memory stick. We’re still working on a way to make this thing less complicated, but right now you need at least a couple pieces of software to make the movie conversion. One is Decrypter, to rip movies off of your DVD’s and store them in VOB format files, and in conjunction with that you will need 3GP Converter, a free utility that converts video files to MP4. You will have better luck with smaller videos, and files that are already in AVI format. Sony itself recently released a converter software, but it does not rip your movies off DVD (understandably) and it also costs $10, on top of being Japanese. The 3GP program at least allows an option to change its language setting to English. Things will continue to iron themselves out as the system nears launch here in the US, but imagine how cool it would be to watch a 2-hour film on a brilliant portable wide-screen. The fact that you can do this, with a system that’s rumored to launch at such a low price is unbelievable.
7) Strong third-party support. The PSP should have a huge selection of games available throughout its lifespan, if Sony’s history is any indication. Even at launch, which we are hoping to come around March 2005, if not a little sooner, you’ll be able to jam with the likes of: ATV Off Road Fury, Dynasty Warriors, Bomberman, Hot Shots Golf, Metal Gear Acid, Ridge Racers, WipeOut Pure, NBA Street, NFL Street, Tony Hawk’s Underground 2, and Twisted Metal: World Tour.
8) The price is going to be right. In Japan, the cost of a PSP is $186 US once you make the conversion. It is very possible, in fact it is probable, that the PSP will launch in the US at $150 for the basic unit, and maybe $200 for the expanded Value Pack (includes a memory card, a strap, and a carry-pouch). Sony is looking to put a serious dent on the Nintendo handheld market and if they can match the price of it here, while at the same time offering all sorts of multimedia capabilities and a big leap in graphics, then it will do just that. Competition is always a good thing though, since this will get Nintendo thinking more about what they can produce to match. There could be a price cut on Nintendo’s part, or there could be bundles offered. Is it any coincidence that the DS Metroid game is also set to be released in March?
9) The screen is a marvel. The PSP’s screen has been called the crowning jewel of the system. It is amazingly bright even from multiple angles and from far away. Think about how some of the Sony VAIO laptop screens look like at your local Best Buy and you’ll have an idea of how sweet it will look. Not only that, it’s also in widescreen format so all games will natively give you a larger view of your surroundings, especially racing and FPS games. If you install your photos into the system, it will generate white bars on the side of the screen at first, since they are 4:3, but there is a zoom option on the PSP so that the image takes up the entire screen. You’ll probably be taking more shots with your digital camera from here on out, so that you can show off pictures easier now. The screen is substantially brighter than the Nintendo DS’.
10) Announcements are coming very soon. Word is that Sony is waiting until the holiday season ends so that they can announce all of the US official launch plans. Since it’s practically January already, it’s only going to be just a short couple of months before we have this thing in our hands! Gamestop and other software retailers are already taking pre-orders so we suggest you run out now if you want to be guaranteed one on launch day. We’re so excited to put this thing through its paces, and hopefully now you can understand why.

My PSP is awesome. I watched the Spider-man 2 movie that came with it and the Graphics are amazing. I like the widescreen since the screen on the gameboy advance SP is so small. The 32 MB memory stick that comes with it can only hold up to 6 or 7 songs at max. And the PSP only plays mpeg-4 format movies. most of the UMD games the PSP plays are going to be short, because my TWISTED METAL HEAD-ON game was so short, it wasn’t even funny. You get about 12 battles and then you fight the last boss, and that was really easy to me.

Hi me agian er dan the DS can do everything the psp can and better and its costs like 20 GBP to but the mp3 feture and about 40 GBP to get the movie player thing on the ds and that still works out less than buying a psp

hmmmm i wonder if ppl r still lookin at this chat forum. Alrite psp isnt cumin out in Australiatill like 2006 so i got my auntie 2 buy 1 from America and send it ova, as 4 games i will get em off ebay. Memory cards may be expensive but you’s r rite 3rd party 1’s will be much cheaaper. Which idiot sed they wish they cant watch a full movie on their psp with a 1gb memory card. aND the BIGGEST idiot on this forum sed sumfin like the snes anmd gamecube r better graphics than ps2. k that is jus like…...FUKEN STUPID snes graphics licks ur grandmas tits and you great grandma’s hairy moustache and ass. Hi peeps, In my opinion both the systems are great. I personally think we are at a stage with graphics that anything better then the NDS graphics are really just eye candy and not always needed. That said, i just want to point out that i have only played with the NDS for a short while and of course, havn’t been able to touch a PSP yet. Anyway, I think if you are going to look at both systems, you shouldn’t compare the graphics, the sound or any other aspects, i think you should just compare the types of games you want to play - eg. I like simulations and shootem ups and a few other genres. So I will pick the NDS, becuase i feel that it will perform best for those specific genres. I feel that if you were to write down a the long list of types of games (arcade/sim/action etc) you’d probably find that the NDS is a better system in terms of scope through design. People have also been saying that the NDS is a rush job, if that is the case (which it may just be) then Nintendo have certainly left themselves alot of room to play with the system in terms of design and innovation. More to the sony psp side of things - I own an XBOX, now this is an awesome console, very powerful, but quite frankly, the power doesn’t mean ####!, the games are somewhat boring, this is why the power of the psp doesn’t really matter, Halo multiplayer rocks, by yourself blows. Everything is about multiplayer now( sony and nintendo can see this) so really i wouldn’t be basing my next handheld on the power of the system alone. Also I don’t think most people know that a NDS cartridge can actually hold up to 1gig of information (cartidge, no load/very minimal times!) (compared to the psp’s 1.8gig UMD), and as we all know, companies are packing more and more memory into smaller and smaller devices all the time
One last thing, I would like to start a new trend when it comes to reviewing. If people could tell us their age as well, this i feel would be able to give persons of differant age groups a better understanding of a reviwers stand point, We all know how little kids like to get excited over what may seem to older kids as crap.

Hey steve you are oviously a DUMBASS if you cant see that gamecube graphics are better than ps2 just look at the specs for it on any site and u can see that the GC has more graphics power and hence better graphics. so do your research before you say stuff, coz it helps if you back what you say up.

Update on my review. Got myself a DS, it rocks, had it for about 3 weeks now, still play it, I know the graphics arn’t as good as the psp, but quite frankly there good enough. You can see what your doing quiet clearly, and i feel that the graphics are up to a tottaly playable standard. I actually look forward to getting home after work and playing with the ds. There is also a SuperCard now for the ds/gba, which allows you to use a cf card (of any size! up to 1gig i think at the moment) and this super card allows you to play videos, mp3’s, ebooks, gba games. Its my understanding that the ds also has a phone program for it now, that allows one to use it like a phone over the net to ring friends…lets see a psp do that!. All though i will admit the game line up at the moment in australia is a little dull, and i hope that nintendo change their minds and release some new stuff sooner rather then later, but yeah other then that, it kicks ass, and i think anyone who is waiting for the psp to come out, should just go and buy a nintendo ds now anyway, becuase you’ll then be able to save up for a psp and have both

PS:PSP is the best handheld gaming system made to date. The ds does not even qualify to compete against the PSP because all of the graphics suck ass. Why not just pay $100 more to get the psp and get the best graphics and some great extras like music and video. If you are thinking about buying a ds then u r ####### stupid because looking at price to what u get the psp is a better buy by far

I think that a PSP is gonna be cooler than the DS,but I’m not saying that the DS isn’t bad, I just don’t really care too much about touching the screen to move around or do things.

Hello again peeps, for all those peeps out there who say psp rocks, and that ds sucks need to play the actual ds first!, once you play the DS you will reliease it isn’t so bad after all, and in fact its pretty fun, to be honest i’ve had more fun playing it then i’ve had playing my XBOX console.
I suggest you guys go and buy a DS and get some fun ass games like Urban GT or bomberman ds. Ive got both, along with super mario 64 and they are all really good games, urban gt took me by suprise, I was a bit worried about the texturing/graphics but once i got it home and started playing it i reliased it was actually better then need for speed 2 on the psp (has anyone tried playing nfs2 on psp with the joystick??? its a joke!) Anyways, Don’t dis the DS until you’ve played them both! And i have!.
I like them both, but so far i’m still liking the DS over the psp. And the graphics on the DS are just going to get better and better (as we’ve seen with the ps2 vs xbox scene) Also i think the psp battery life is much better then most people think, you can play a umd movie like charlies angels about 3 times over before the battery will go dead!, thats plenty for anyone.
As you can see i don’t mind either of the handhelds, but i do object to the psp actually being better then the ds.

i think that the ds can do alot of great stuff.
i live in england and my mate bought a ds and it was brilliant.i was going to buy one.
but i thought to my self no wait there could be the ps3 or the psp.
im gona get a psp from my dad, so im gona buy the psp and it has, brilliant graphics, adult/adolessent, games and great multimedia functions.
im only 12 but i think that if you buy a ds you must be abot 6-10 years old or have a childish life.
the psp is the future the ds is the past why do you think the ds is so cheap now?tell me if you think im right.

i have had my psp for almost three weeks now and this baby still doesnt have a single scratch on it. I play it a lot every day, i take care of it more than you can imagine. i even made a bed for it for whenever im not playing it. and i really want to sell my ds so i can get all this cool stuff for my psp. so all you ####### people who would prefer the ds rather than the psp, you know the psp is a whole lot better. you just try to live with having a ds cause your too poor to buy a psp. psp is better and all you ds fanboys know it!!

Yo, guys, calm down. The PSP and DS were intended to do different things. I own a PSP, which I got for my birthday, and a Game Boy SP. I’ve also played on my friend’s DS quite a lot, so I’m all over the board here.
True, the PSP has less battery life. Agreed. Maybe people get pissed off at the fact that shiny metal gets scratched, or that black plastic shows finger oil. Wipe it off.
The PSP is a multifunction device. The DS is exclusively for games. If you really need six hours of video games in a single day, on the go, then you need to find something to read. Even porn if not actual literature, but that’s kinda unrelated.
The DS is made to last a younger audience for hours of car trips. Also, video games cost a lot. I don’t mind buying stuff used. I really don’t care that the headphones and remote thingy are white. If you do, then it’s not Sony’s fault.
The PSP was not supposed to be a laptop/iPod competitor/console competitor/wonder device. Overall, I’m satisfied with all my Sony gear. I got a ps1 right before the launch of the PS2. Then it was left open on the floor of my -shared- bedroom for a year, getting birdseed, bird crap, cat hair and dust shoved in to it. I cleaned it up with Windex and a cotton swab, popped in a game and it’s still going strong.
If a PSP vs DS debate means so much to you, stop being so picky. I play Untold Legends every day, for hours. I get five hours of battery life at least, and then I plug it in to the charger. Sure, my GBA SP gets like 12 hours of battery life, but it’s a little screen and less demanding games.
Bottom line: They’re not head to head systems. I’m going to get both and enjoy them both. Live with it. Be nice to your technology, and don’t bitch about stuff that doesn’t matter. I just sold off the PSP stuff I didn’t want and used that to buy a game. -My PSP didn’t come bundled. Evil parents.-

Did you know that there is a zero tollerance on dropping your psp. No matter what if you drop it it is out of warranty. If it slips off your sofa and lands on a carpeted floor the warranty is void.
How do you like that for Standing behind a great product. Even if you say a friend might have dropped it it is out of warranty. You can drop a dell laptop from 3 feet onto concrete and it would be covered under warranty but then again it wouldn’t break. Sony standards ar very low.

a BIG bump by me:
Now that a LONG time has passed since this was published, we can see that the DS has barely improved since the release (except for the DS Lite), but the PSP is improving ALL the time. Firmware upgrades allow u to access the internet (not just updating ur firmware, but browsing ALL websites), the Max Media Manager Pro makes adding media (movies, music, etc.) to ur PSP easy as hell (no hassles), the music player has a LOAD of features like visual effects, fast forwarding, etc. etc. (imagine windows media player at your fingertips, but even better). The PSP has the awesome titles of GTA Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories, which crush EVERY other game’s butts (except maybe GTA4).
What does the DS have? 2 dimensional pokemon figures? No memory card capabilities (limited space)? Watered-down internet? Pictochat? Ha. One word: Pathetic.
