Test Drive a Mac mini For 30 Days

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Hot Deals, PC / Laptop

Mac mini Test Drive

Apple seems to be swinging for the fences with this one. They are offering anyone who is interested an extended trial of the Mac mini. One can only assume that they either want to move some stagnant product, or that this is a move to get a large amount of Mac computers into the hands of those who use Windows but are curious. Now, what is really going on here is that Apple is just extending the return period for the mini, as any Apple product can be returned within 14 days for a full refund. Nonetheless, here is how it works according to Apple:

  1. Purchase a new Mac mini from the Apple Store online. You can also get an Apple keyboard and mouse, such as our new Mighty Mouse.
  2. Set it up and start enjoying it.
  3. If you don’t love it, call us within 30 days of your order and we’ll arrange for you to return your system — including the Apple keyboard and mouse — for a full refund.

If you are interested, you have until Halloween 2005 to make your purchase, and it must be done online.

It seems to me that this isn’t any different from just buying the thing and then returning it normally. It would be nice if there was a real incentive in doing this, but I can’t really see one.

It is a nice bit of marketing though.

minus the shipping charges i presume.

They usually charge 10% for opened computers. So they’re extending the return period from 14 to 30 days and waiving the restocking fee. It’s a great deal for anyone who’s not sure if they want to switch.

Phredd

Phredd,

Or you could just buy the Mac mini at a retailer like CompUSA or MicroCenter that don’t have restocking fees for opened hardware and also have 30 day return policies. That is what I meant in my original comment.

Apple isn’t offering anything in this “deal” that can’t be had somewhere else *all* of the time.  For that matter, if done through a local retailer, you don’t have to bother with the hassle of shipping.

If you feel you absolutely *must* buy a computer directly from Apple, then I suppose this is something to consider.  Otherwise, this is a less then meaningless act of marketing.

Engadget is reporting that Apple already pulled the plug on the promotion, OH WELL!
