Apple Spill Detection Waterproofs Your MacBook Warranty

Spill your morning coffee on your MacBook and then take it in for covered warranty service? Those days are ending; water damage is obviously a violation of the AppleCare warranty, and the new MacBook and MacBook Pro computers, introduced last week, include what cellphones have had for years: Liquid Submersion Indicators, which alert technicians to water damage. Located under the keyboard and near the trackpad, the sensors change color when exposed to a liquid. Once these sensors are activated, there is no way to undo the process, so you’re just gonna have to fess up next time, so please - no more Shirley Temples near the hardware, okay?

Will apple still fix the computer though if you have the apple care protection thing?

No. Both the Apple Limited Warranty, and the AppleCare Protection Plan, do NOT cover liquid spill or accidental drop damage.
All repair costs on any spill-damaged unit, even one under AppleCare, are the responsibility of the user.
If the spill affects the Main Logic Board, you can expect to pay a flat “Tier” repair rate, the fee for which is comparable to a new portable computer.
Simply refrain from having beverages nearby your computer, and all will be well.
In the instances where a user KNOWS that they will spill on it *sometime* within their computer’s life (or drop it frequently, or beat the crap out of it, etc), I recommend that these “heavy use” users save the $200 they would spend on AppleCare, and instead put it in a jar towards their next new laptop, after they spill/drop/crack/break their existing one.
Do you expect your car’s warranty to cover accidentally driving into a lake, or off a cliff? Probably not. Computer manufacturers are no different than any other manufacturers. The responsibility still lies in the maturity and wisdom of the computer’s user.

Laptop spills are the worst I can’t believe apple won’t fix it. At www.mailyourpc.com they fix your laptop no matter the damage its great because now I won’t have any more laptop troubles. I still will get laptops from apple because the mac-book air is so cool.

Would it be so difficult for Apple to make their keyboards splash proof? NO. The thing we all need to consider is that manufacturers (inc Apple) often allow (in fact they design) flaws like this into their products. Why? To generate a few extra bucks. So rather than fixing an obvious and easy solve problem they leave the issue ‘as is’ and make the issue void on their ‘replace and repair’ policies, this is one thing that sucks about the cash sucking capitalist pigs our current monetary system nurtures. Infact, the very fact that Apple have installed splash detection is all the evidence that i need to prove that they have considered the issue of spilling liquids onto the keyboard and rather than thinking, oh wouldn’t it be good for our loyal, cash strapped, customers if we made the keyboard area of the Macbook splash proof, because its an obvious problem and sooo easy to solve, but no, instead they go and install a method of proving that you have spilt liquid on your macbook so that they can prove it was YOUR own fault that liquid got into the machine through a purposely badly designed keyboard. There are examples of these kinds of flaws and this kind of greedy thinking all over the place. To the competition out, out design Apple in this area and you will be one small step closer to undoing their current success.

Hate to say this, but it IS YOUR FAULT if you spill liquid on your computer. Evil or not, it’s easy to prevent by being f’ing responsible about how you use your equipment. QQ much?
Besides: Apple’s target customer is not cash strapped. If you are cash strapped, you are not Apple’s ideal customer base, no matter how much you like them.
Signed, a cash strapped Mac repair tech who only owns PCs because he can’t afford the hardware that he services.

Well, sometimes its not our fault when SOMEBODY ELSE spills their coffee on the computer despite being told 20 times over a week not to put drinks near the computer.
What are we supposed to do? Build a glass dome around the computer?
When somebody else, just as cash-strapped as you, spills their coffee and destroys your computer, they can barely help and pay for it. Everything gets screwed up including whatever friendship you may have had.
If Apple can design trip-proof cables and touch-screen computers then surely then can put some spill-protection on their f*cking computers.
