24 Hour Fitness Launches bodybugg Upgrade, Now Mac Compatible
If you’re a fan of the hit NBC reality series, “The Biggest Loser,” you’ve no doubt noticed that contestants wear a device called a bodybugg on the back of their right arm. The bodybugg is a biometric calorie management system available through 24 Hour Fitness, which uses four sensors to convert measurements of galvanic skin response, physical activity, and body temperature into a real-time measurement of calories burned throughout the day. Users wear the compact armband, which easily fits under clothing, over the triceps on their upper left arm - allowing you to take it everywhere you go.
According to the release, “No matter what activity a user is doing – washing dishes, playing with the kids or working out – the bodybugg calculates the amount of energy expended in each motion. Users then download their captured bodybugg data to a Web interface that tracks caloric measurements and helps them monitor their food intake and activity levels as they seek to achieve their fitness goals. The Web interface includes customized menus and a database of thousands of common foods to make calorie-tracking simple.”
Upgraded features of the new bodybugg system include:
- New sleek, contemporary look and 50% smaller size
- USB cable to upload data and charge the device
- Now both PC and Mac compatible
- A free six-month (previously only three-month) online subscription to the www.bodybugg.com Web interface for tracking progress and success.
The basic principle behind weight loss is simple: you just need to burn more calories than you take in; combining the bodybugg with it’s online services and adjusting your own personal choices based on its recommendations, weight loss may just become a little easier. Watch for a review in the near-future.

The bodybugg is NOT MAC compatible.
If ever, you can install a parallel to your MAC to run PC/Windows, then it’ll work.
I don’t see anything in the myapex for MAC drivers; popups and whatnot.
So…yeah.
I’m one of the people waiting for BodyMedia to support MAC.

I just got the BodyBugg a few weeks ago. I have it set up on my husbands laptop PC because it is NOT MAC compatible. I own a newer MAC computer, and was unable after a few hours of messing with it to install the program. I was able to successfully install to my husbands computer within a few minutes. I am glad it works, but disappointed that it does not work on my mac as this is the computer I use most often.

Okay, I contacted Tech Support about the non mac compatibility issue. They had me change a setting on my safari and I am glad to say that it now works! You would not believe how excited I am about this because my MAC is so much faster and more advanced than my (1yr old, very expensive) laptop! The number for Bodybugg tech support is 8663149423 if you are having the same problem. The entire call was under 5 minutes!

I posted a note below, I was having the same issue, i called Tech Support and they were able to walk me through changing my Safari to run on 32-bit. Not sure what that means but my bodybugg is successfully working on my brand new MAC! Tech Supports number is 8663149423

Wow, I’ve never seen anything like this before.
I imagine people will be lining up to get this.
Back when I was trying desperately to measure my calorie intake, and how many calories burned per day, I would have gotten this without a second thought.

I would like one of these but I understand how they can be harmful to your health like the first comment said.

For those who need to change Safari to run in 32 bit mode…
1) find Safari in Finder
2) “Right click” and choose Get Info
3) click the “Open in 32-bit mode”
4) restart mac
That should do the trick. Additional information can be found at http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/03/lost-your-favorite-safari-plugin-after-upgrading-to-snow-leopard/

Sounds like a good little device. Surely if it was harmful to your health they wouldn’t use it on a show like Biggest Loser.

Cool device! Does it also happen to measure the amount of calories you burn using your brain??? Just curious. I heard somewhere that our brain burns about 25% of the calories we consume daily. I thought that was pretty awesome!

I would be interested in something like this but I would be worried that I would become too obsessed with calories. Usually the more I think about them, the more that I want to eat them!

Hey that’s a really awesome tool. If there is a way to enter (or even for the tool to figure out your daily caloric requirements), then this could be a great way for one to lose weight quickly and be aware of their calorie consumption and expenditure.

I actually went out and bought one of these since reading this post. It has been very helpful as I think I was over estimating the amount of calories that I burned when I was working out.

Certainly a very interesting little device. Not one i have heard of before. Not suprising it has such a heafty price tag attached to it. Also if its as pointed out in other posts, not MAC compatible it would indeed reduce its value considerably. On that basis i would maybe consider $150 for it, maximum.
Great post and very informative. Thanks for sharing.

i think i have the same problem as you. I am thinking about getting one of these now after reading this.

Great equipment! However, I think one has to be at a fanatical stage of counting calories to wear one of these all the time even when washing dishes. Some good old fashion exercise, feel the sweat and thank you I am done.

I wondered what those were. I watch BL all the time in all countries! Love it.
We are thinking of getting these for our boot campers
