Zune HD gets handled, loved

Zune HD

Sure, the has been the butt of a lot of jokes since its first debut, but in all seriousness, we believe the Zune device is better than the iPod classic, and that the Zune software beats iTunes, hands down. Now, the is preparing to make an impact, and it’s nothing to sneeze at. We’ve told you about it before, but to refresh your memory a bit, CNET got to spend a little time with the device that boasts the ability to view rented Zune Marketplace Xbox content, “lightning fast” browser, and screen goodness. Oh, and don’t forget about that whole 720p output for HDTV thing.

One thing that stands out, though, is the unbranded browser:

...the Zune’s new Web browser smokes. Not since first using the iPhone have I been this impressed with a mobile web browser. There’s no branding on the browser, but I was told it was cooked up by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team (makes sense). Page load was snappy, and pinching and reorienting pages work just like the iPhone and iPod Touch.

So it would appear that Zune has some clout to brag about, and it’s aiming for the iPod touch.  Of course, this is all second-hand information until we get our hands on the device ourselves, which should happen sometime in the next week. The Zune HD is still on track for a fall release, but no pricing details have been announced just yet.

Two questions:
1. What about Apps? Video playback is only a small part of what makes the iPod touch special. The lack of 70,000 modern multi-touch apps is a big limitation.

2. Why would you want to limit the number of movies you could fit on your portable device by cramming huge HD movie files which the tiny screen can’t even display in all their glory. Having to plug into a big plasma screen kind of misses the point of having a portable device don’t you think?

No sense in watching HD movies on a small screen, but it makes perfect sense to be able to watch an 720p HD movie stored on the device while it’s parked on a dock and charging up.  It’ll look great on the flat panel HDTV.  Have to leave in the middle of the movie?  Take the Zune HD with you and watch the rest of the movie during your commuter ride or in the waiting room of the airport.  Can’t stand the small screen for movies?  That’s why it does music and photos and radio and the web, and probably a few games.

WOW, great the Zune is finally better than an iPod CLASSIC! There is a reason that it is called the CLASSIC, one being that Apple has not spent any time developing it anymore in well over two years which is a long time when it comes to this market!

The iPod touch is king now with its 65K apps, that includes some 14K games, browser, email, WiFi, Bluetooth and soon they will sport a camera too!

I think MS is digging in the wrong place and the financials for the Zune is SO bad that it has dragged now the whole division. This while they watch the iPhone blow past Windows Mobile in only six months, even though Microsoft had a ten year head start!!

HAHA, Keep trying to sell Zunes! Who cares about HD on such a little screen, who can even tell the difference?

to bad 64902 of the apps are fart simulators and porn
