Verizon Decides to Offer BlackBerry Tour to Existing Customers

It looks like Verizon has decided to start offering the BlackBerry Tour to existing customers. Originally, Verizon planned to only offer the Blackberry Tour to new and qualified customers. However, due to all the negative press, it appears that they’ve changed their tune, as their BlackBerry Tour page now states that “existing customers will be able to upgrade or purchase the Blackberry Tour.” They haven’t given any further info on how existing customer upgrades will work, however they say interested customers should come back to the website tomorrow for more information. We are definitely liking the fact that mobile providers seem to finally started to be listening to their customers. As you recall, AT&T changed their iPhone 3GS upgrade policy due to heavy backlash from current iPhone 3G customers who wanted to upgrade immediately.

Why did VZ try to screw existing customers in the first place?!?! It costs 3x as much to bring in a new customer vs keep an existing one. The fact that they even did this makes me wonder how they are going to try and screw me when they get the Palm Pre and I am eligible for an early upgrade in Feb 2010. They have already reduced the New Every 2 credit from $100 to $50 ($50 to $30 for smaller plans). What else do you have in the pipeline to screw existing customers VZ? You’re actually making me think of switching to Sprint when its all said and done if ths BS keeps up. Good grief!

I’m a Sprint Premier customer and my upgrade time will come in 7/1. I thought of getting the Palm Pre since it was announced but I learned about the Tour not too long ago.
I never owned a BB nor a Palm device before, but would like to get your thoughts to see if I get convinced to try the Tour or stick to my original plan on getting the Pre.
I don’t really care about having a touchscreen or not. Aside from calls of course, this is what I use/plan to use my mobile device for:
- I do a lot of emailing (gmail)
- Use Gmail calendar on a daily basis
- Lots of texting (about 25 a day)
- Google Maps and Sprint Navigation
- Document viewing (word, excel and PDF)
- Alarm Clock with customizable alerts/tones
- Copy and Paste
- Real MMS (not like iPhone that was only via email)
- Google Contacts 2-way syncing
- Listen mp3’s from time to time and Pandora
- View videos/movies sideloaded and YouTube
- Web browsing (basic stuff)
I’m open to suggestions, let me know if the Tour is a better choice for me!

Here’s my take on BB’s (although limited since I have only had the Blackberry Pearl).
BB’s are great phones for business use. They have nice capabilities with video and camera but one issue I have had is their browsing capabilities (outside of the BB Storm).
The reason I like the Pre is twofold- I am looking for business functionality plus browsing capabilities. I have found that usually touch screen phones have the best browsing (iphone, pre, etc) . But not all touchscreens are built alike. While my experience with touchscreen is limited, I have been enamored with the iphone and pre’s ability to browse and navigate on touch.
The issue I have with touch only phones are that I like to respond to email/text/sms/mms, etc on a phyiscal keyboard. The Pre offers this, and despite concerns that the keys are too small, the keys type fine (I’m a fan of their jelly like feel on the keys to ensure accurate typing).
If I was a Sprint customer, I would go for the Pre, but that’s just me. Hopefully my descriptions above shed a little light on why I want to move from BB and go to a device like the Pre (although I’ll have to wait until the beginning of 2010 to get it on the VZ network).
