Wii Shortage Imminent - Coincidence? We Think Not

WiiNintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says that demand of the Nintendo Wii will again be greater than the supply this year. Since its launch, the Wii has topped the game system charts. During August, it sold over 400,000 pieces to the Xbox’s 276,000 and PS3’s 130,000. Fils-Aime says that they are doing all they can to meet the demand and that “the issue is not a lack of production.”

Sorry, but we beg to differ. We know that half of the fun of electronics life is waiting in line for an iPhone, bargaining on eBay, and in general picking up that special item early, because you know that there will never be enough of the those things that we covet the most. It’s time that those who are in control and earnestly chart sales realized we are not as naive as they would like to believe.

Your response to Reggie’s statement does not make any sense. The general public is indeed naïve when it comes to issues such as demand and supply because they believe it’s easy to ramp up production just like THAT. My guess is that, if Nintendo were to increase capital that enables them to ramp up supply more quickly then they are now (before the large demand, they were working on a gradual supply increase curve), they would spend significant amounts of money which would be wasted if sales ever did start to slack off. I doubt the general public thinks beyond a simple ‘increase of supply - profit, therefore, Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot and watching themselves bleed by not increasing supply.’ I doubt that’s the case, or else everyone and his brother would have a Wii by now.

In any case, your argument seems to be that demand for the Wii will outstrip supply because it’s a greatly desired item at the moment. What’s the conflict between that and the issue not being a lack of production? Reggie’s argument supports what you said.

if your still looking for the wii they have them at wiipeddler.com, free shipping no tax. Little bit over retail, but well worth it

Michael, you are so naive.  The purposely created lack of supply creates an increased demand,  people do not simply switch to a PS3 or X360.  Kids are demanding of their parents a Wii, a PS3 is no substitute.  Now this lack of supply makes (dumb) parents place orders for a machine 2 months before they need to purchase one for Xmas. That’s 2 months of braindead, hyped sales.  If the Wii was available parents would wait and during that time some children would change their mind and demand PS3’s and X360’s.

Believe me at my place of work I have met the “braindead” parent buying Wii’s on ebay at inflated prices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
