Destroy Sensitive Discs With Aplomb

There are paper shredders, but what do you do when you want to get rid of a disc with sensitive data? Sure, you can key them or melt them in the microwave, or you can be an adult about it and use the USB powered CD Destroyer. The gadget can be used on CD/DVD/CD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, and DVD-ROM, can take care of the evil discs in only 5 seconds, and claims a lifetime of 100,000 CDs/DVDs. At a size of 60 x 120 x 50 mm, it weighs only 130 g, and comes with a 50 cm long power cable at a price of $29.99 at Brando.

that thing would perhaps work better if you put the disk in label side down.
The plastic on the bottom is fairly thick and those scratches could (or so it looks like from the video on the linked site) be filled in and/or buffed out…
The top side however is just paint and laquer over the metalic layer that holds the data.. if you can get in and carve up that layer, it makes it much much harder to read the disk later.
but frankly 3 seconds in a microwave is just as fast and a lot harder to recover from than this thing… (and you can do several disks at once that way.. but put in a glass of water or something so there is someplace for the microwaves to go and you don’t damage your oven..
