MIT Created Nanowire Membranes Clean up Oil
MIT researchers have come up with a new membrane made out of nanowires that can absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil. Not only can it be reused, the oil can be recovered. Made of potassium manganese oxide, the membranes work when heated above oil’s boiling point. Team leader Francesco Stellacci claims that the mesh selectively absorbs hydrophobic liquids from water. It is believed that the same technology can be used for water filtering and purification. We call that Brawny to the max.

This would be used in stuff like ocean oil spills ,i guess ,right?

What a great thing for helping clean up oil spills. I’m sure it could be used in anywhere, not just the ocean.

The article didn’t seem that detailed though.

Now this I really like. I wonder if they will be able to adapt this to other uses.

2 years ago, I got to visit the University of Kentucky where they were working on making nanotubes and testing them for strength. It was very cool.

Wow, it can absorb 20 times it’s weight! This nanowire mesh is really powerful. I also noticed in the article that this nanowire paper is inexpensive to produce! I’m sure that this will help improve our environment and purify water.

aha! a use for nano tech
i posted a thread in the forums about nano glass and paper, but they didnt serve much of a purpose
but this is what iv been looking for!

We need this method to help learn more about the secrets of science and society.
Science is amazing. Nice topic.

This a great article. 20 times its weight in oil. Wow. Nano is going to open the flood gates to so much technology in the future. I watched a special on how they want to inject nano gold particles into cancer cells and use radio frequencies to heat them up and ultimately kill the cancer cells. As radio frequencies will not hurt humans but will heat up the nano metal inside the cells
