Elgato Turbo.264 HD received

We were big fans of the original Elgato Turbo.264 hardware encoder, so when we heard that the company had released an updated version, called the Turbo.264 HD, we pretty much ordered one immediately. The product promises to “quickly convert any video into a format that you can play anywhere and share with anyone” and supports HD camcorders, AVCHD, and direct upload to YouTube. We are gonna tear into this one, and report back with our thoughts. Meantime, any questions on the device?

It looks like a pretty slick device. My only question is whether or not it supports the MOD and TOD proprietary codecs used by Panasonic and Canon?

The previous version slowed down to a few frames per second when converting HD MKV files. I am curious if this new version handles HD in MKV files better.

Davis - I am impressed. You drag a .mod or .tod file (or multiple) into it, and it reads it perfectly. It can convert them one by one, or stitch them together. Very nice!

Whoa baby, you just impressed me too. TOD is probably one of the worst formats out there. As far as I know there’s only two video editing software packages that can even handle the conversion, yet consumers don’t know that they’ll be locked in until after they buy the camera and figure it out. Still can’t figure out why Toshiba didn’t just use mpeg4/h.264 as a solution. Probably to save a couple bucks in licensing fees. This product now gets recommended to anyone who asks me about these proprietary formats.

Hello Andru
I am thinking of buying one, but want to make sure that it can import .MOD files created on JVC video camera. I saw your comment saying that it can handle .MOD files. Call me a bit conservative, but I’d really appreciate if you can confirm it once again.
Hope its not a big inconvenience for you.
Many thanks in advance for your help and support.
kind regards,
Hemant
