PSP Problems - Dead Pixels
I got my shiny new PSP today at Gamestop. There I was, all psyched up and ready to roll. I was prepared to experience the joy that comes will all things new and electronic - and BAM! Three dead pixels on the right hand side. Many have reported that this is a problem with their PSP’s. This is most likely due to the fact that Sony ramped up production to get a million units ready for the US launch. I just returned from my local Gamestop, and unfortunately they have no PSP’s in stock (surprise!), and they don’t know when they will receive more. I did manage to get them to agree to call me as soon as they get one for exchange. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I got a couple dead pixels, but only one is in an annoying spot. I am sure I will not even notice it after the “new” wears off. I am just going to roll with mine “as-is”

Yes, I have two. But since I only notice them when the screen is completely black, and only then, it’s not a big deal.

ive got a couple too but 1 is staring me right in the face, i had a little trouble with the UMD latch too so im gonna get a new one today

I think i’ll wait until Sony can produce something that is ‘brand new’ ie perfect, before i part with my money.

Glad I haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, but I’m still planning on getting one. So I think in the mean time I’ll stock up on a couple games and a 1GB memory stick. I’m shooting to get one either next month (April) or sometime in May?

what is a dead pixel? i got a psp and an lcd and everyone always asks me if it has a dead pixel—what is that?
Reply to this: comment | thread
Pixels are the very small blocks of light that make up the screen. A “dead pixel” is a dark spot in the screen.
In simple terms, imagine a wall full of light bulbs… and one is burned out.

LOL! They must be using those good quality Sharp LCD screens!

It is virtually impossible to create an LCD screen with no dead pixels. It is just an unfortunate side effect of the process of making these screens. The goal is to make these defects as minimal as possible.

1st one I got from Best Buy had one big one and another small cluster of dead pixels. 2nd one I got from wal-mart only had one small spot on the left. I think I can live with that.

This happpened to Nintendo DS too except Nintendo said that they fixed it immediately and issued new ones to unsatisifed customers.

YA, when you’re trying to pump out as many LCD’s as sony is, I’m sure the production environment isn’t perfectly pure, which is what it needs to be for no dead pixels. my friend bought two fo them, one had a couple dead pixels, the other one didn’t. guess which one he’s sending back :D

I have 2 dead pixels….will sony or eb games alow me to return it?
Reply to this: comment | thread
sony said they will allow for people to get new ones through them
Reply to this: comment | thread
Well I have two coming.
Which ever one has dead pixels goes back to Best Buy.

EB Games let me exchange my psp for a new one and this one has no dead pixels. They also told me that if you got your psp from sony, the only way to return it is if it has more than 3 dead pixels and you got the extended warrenty

Thats pretty ###### of SONY, the DS didnt have any screw ups with the screens, and it had two times the chance to than Sony, second, those ####### at Sony knew about this, how couldnt they, dont they test their ####?
Give me a ####### break, #### me once with the 3 hour battery life, shame on me, #### me twice, with the ####### screen, shame on you sony, shame on you…

well i got my psp the first day it came out. and I just got a dead pixel. U’ll see it when the entire screen is white or VERY light color but while you are playing, its nearly impossible to see it. hmm and my battery is fine. playing twisted metal or darkstalkers I get a Good 4 or 5 hrs before the battery light starts to blink. the system had only been out for few days, I think it’s kind of soon to tell anything at the point. oh and my UMD lactch dont open when I twist my system…

got one on my Japanese PSP new out of the box - lower edge, center. white dot. not visible with game or video play back - only when screen is dark.

wonder what is Sony doing here with these screens?!? Manufacturers can easily make LCD panels this size w/o any defects at all, and it makes me wonder if Sony is going super-dirt-cheap by outsourcing to some 3rd party newbie LCD plant, or just picking up all sorts of scraps from wherever to toss into the PSP units.
—-
Anyways, what about dust under the faceplate in front of the LCD panel?!?
I’ve had my PSP for less than two months, and it already has dust under there! Gads!!!
You’d think Sony would design the PSP to air-tight seal the LCD panel from this disaster!!!
Bad Sony, bad!!

I am on my second psp now. The first one had four dead pixles and the second has black spots in the plastic on the screen. I think I’m gonna take it back and not get another one till sony decides to use some quality controll on thier products. It seem that they didn’t have any one inspecting these things before they went out.

Got my PSP on launch day. I have an inny winny teeny winny single white/discolored pixel on the upper right edge of the screen. Luckily it blends in with the white battery bar lining on the PSP home page. In terms of gameplay, I don’t notice this spec at all. I only notice it when the screen loads (Need for Speed Underground Rivals between races) and the screen goes almost entirely black. After hearing reports of mass rainbow pixel patterns on other PSP’s, I’m happy with my 1 little burned dot. I view my PSP as unique because of it, just in case someone with a pixel cratered screen tries to swap memory cards with my PSP and claim it as theres will immediately experience a head bashing! My PSP isn’t perfect but hey no one is. I know that there are a good bunch of PSP’s that are perfect, but at least I can tell mine apart and that little white mole isn’t bothersome at all while playing or watching movies, unless its a scary movie when everything is pitch black of course.

This is B.S.—got ripped off by those swindlers—250 $ and they don’t even have a clear screen—then I call Sony and they say they can’t do anything about this—and even if I return it they cannot promise there wont be any dead pixels on the screen—I understand that games are still playable—but come on thats f—-ckn expensive for a gaming system that doesnt even come with a game—I might be able to cope with this if the price was cheaper—they should have warned people before the initial marketing propaganda—im not buying that all pixel screens have white dots—thats BS—-Ive had plenty of lcd gadgets that are perfect—Dont buy into there lies!!I would advise anyone thinking of getting a PSP to wait a while—until they can fix this issue—dont blow 250$ and be taken for a smuck like me!!F—ck them

I have at about 3 readily seen dead pixels. Then there are MANY that are seen only when I am looking at a green or yellow screen. At least 20. I’m going to take the unit back to the store. I would expect a few, but this is just too irritating. At first I thought it was dust, but after I downloaded the dead pixel checker images (solid color jpegs that help you check the pixels) I noticed a lot. Not cool.

I have 2 dead pixels, one in the lower right-hand corner and one half way up on the left-hand side. There not obvious at all, only when the screen is blank. The PSP is great other than that, but I do think the battery life is quite short. What do you think?

Im on my 3rd psp and i got the system like 3 days ago!! On my 1st psp i had a dead pixel on the top which was barely noticeable but i worry alot so i decided 2 call up best buy and ask them wuts up with this. They said they were willing to exchange so i was like ok cool…so i went to best buy and got a fresh new psp so im like yay….This psp ended up having 11 pixels so im like WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and so i go back again and i exchanged again but this time i got 2 check 2 c if there are any dead pixels b4 i took it home. I found out that every single one i open at least had 1 dead pixel in it so i juss chose 1 dat had only 1 dead pixel and stuck with dat…

I have a cluster of dead pixels in the upper left part of the screen, but I can only notice when the screen goes completely black… I was watching Resident Evil Apocalypse initially, and when I first seen them, I thought they were stars! :/

I Pre-Ordered My PsP Months Before It’s Release. I Was The First Out Of My Friends To Buy One. So I Didn’t Realize It Wasnt Suppose To Sound Like It Was Vomiting Everytime It Was Reading A UMD. And I Was Also Told, And Read, About The Dead Pixel Issue, And How They Are Ok. Well I Hate To Say It, But It’s Not. I Don’t Know How Many People Read This Stuff, But If You Are Reading This, And Havn’t Purchased One Yet….DONT! I Bought The PsP, 4 Games, And The 1gb Card. 1 Out Of The 4 Currently Work, And I Have Been Warning EVERYONE. Yeah, I Bought The Warrantys On The PsP, And Games…BUT WTF! I HOPE SONY KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH THIS BIG PS3 LAUNCH, IF IT IS ANYTHING LIKE THE PsP…. THEY ARE IN TROUBLE

hi everyone and sorry to hear about ur misfortune.the psp is a great machine but dead pixels whats up with that and the price this is just mad. I mean you would expect to get a psp that works 110% for that price i mean take me i have gone through 5 yes 5 psp which all have dead pixels and getting my 6th psp tommorro(hope it dosent have dead pixels) but i have read somthing on the net that might help its a software which is loaded on from ur memory card which is a video which flashes alot of colours and this method is meant to unstick the stuck pixels or dead pixels.NOTE YOU HAVE TO LEAVE IT ON FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF HOURS, ONLY WORKS 60% OF THE TIME, LAST THING THIS SOFTWARE MAY ALSO INCREASE DEAD PIXELS SO ONLY USE IT IF THERE IS 2 OR MORE PIXELS. IF U WANT THIS SOFTWARE THEN EMAIL ME AND I WILL SEND IT TO U. HOPE THIS HELPS

I sent mine in to SONY and they are just going to give me a new one in replacement. They said if I had a problem try it for a few weeks AGAIN then send it back and we will send you a new one AGAIN. I said I did not pay for this and they told me that the pixel problem is not covered under the warrenty BUT you have a 1 year warrenty if you do not like your PSP you can send it back and they will give you a new one. I have been a fan of SONY for along time with the PSone and PS2 this has really made me feel different toward SONY. The support was very rude and was making sure I did not drop it or anything. I will post back when I get mine in thanks for the reply..

What is the difference? please help

I bought a PSP and returned it the next day. The screen did have more than 2 dead pixels (one that was quite visible in the center) however, the biggest problem was with the plastic outer-surface of the screen: there were about 20 divots or bubbles in the plastic… which looked like someone took a pin and poked holes on the surface. You can only see them at an angle when the screen is off. When the screen is turned on, the divots refract the light making it look like the screen has stuck pixels.
