Microsoft has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses

Windows 8 Pro

Microsoft has announced that it has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since the release of the operating system on October 26th. Although reviews of the operating system suggest it has not been well received, it seems that consumers are excited about Microsoft's new hotness. Also, sales figures revealed by Microsoft state it sold just 4 million copies in the first week of launch, so it's obviously ramped up a bit.

At this pace, it could surpass Windows 7 sales of 60 million sold in 2 months. Perhaps, a huge benefit comes from the ability to sell by way of digital; similar to how Apple sold OS X 10.7 Lion in 2011. Still, Microsoft didn't break down the stats as to whom the licenses were sold to. As Mary Joe Foley from ZDNet puts it: "Update: Yes, we don't really know exactly what "licenses sold" includes and does not. Sold to consumers? Sold to channel? Includes licenses grandfathered in through volume license agreements. I've asked Microsoft to see if officials will clarify. If they do, I'll add an update here."
