M-Audio Keystation 49e Impressions

M-Audio Keystation 49e

I recently purchased the M-Audio Keystation 49e midi controller and I’m very pleased with it.  For the price (129.99) you can’t really beat the quality, which doesn’t surprise me given M-Audio’s impressive track record.

The keys are slightly weighted, making them feel a lot more like a real piano, and they are thankfully noiseless no matter how hard you tend to rock out when you play, avoiding that irritating clicking that can come with some midi keyboards.  Another great feature: it’s USB powered, so you don’t need to plug it in. However, if you feel the need, it takes a fairly standard 9V DC power adapter.  For even more flexibility, you can connect via USB or MIDI, so even if you lack MIDI capability on your current system, you can still use the device.  That’s a great feature for people looking to try out electronic music production without buying a ton of gear.  Along with a 49 key spread, it features pitch blend and modulation wheels, foot-pedal input compatibility, the keyboard is velocity sensitive, and has a volume control knob.  It includes drivers for not only previous versions of Windows, but also for Mac OS 9, making it a very versatile device.

The Keystation 49e is a great choice for seasoned electronic musicians as well as beginners just looking into having a keyboard to play with.  On a scale of 10, I’d give it a 10, for sure.

What sound module(s) do you use?

I need to get one so jus’ wonderin.

I would be nice if there were some knobs along the top, but oh well…

It’s really very easy to use under Mac OSX because you don’t need any driver.
Garage Band automatically recognises it.
Just plug and play !

Agreed. I use it with Garageband and it just works. I have a little setup in the basement and the M-Audio Keystation was the first thing I bought. I then purchased their portable audio hub which works over USB as well - just works. Great stuff.

Garageband is for kids.  Get some real DAW software… rolleyes  tongue wink

Garage Band is very easy to use.
You can make your own compositions in a few minutes with all the samples and the loops integrated in the software.
By the way, it is very cheap compared to softwares like Logic Pro or even Logic Express.

GuruMat, I know, I was only joking… cheese
Although I’ve never used it, it does seem like a cool product for people who aren’t serious about making music, and also might serve as a nice introduction to it.  And yeah, it certainly is cheaper, as I have spent more money on music software in the last 5 years than I am willing to admit…and now I’m broke because of it…

this is a very cool device, I’ve been having a lot of fun with it (I’m just a beginner), anyway, now I’m also trying to organize my digital music files, and I’m considering the www.olive.us or the www.sonos.com , anyone can give some opinion on these or on another one?
