iPod + iTrip + Sony Ericsson W800i = Makeshift ROKR

w800 ROKRWe just discovered a neat little hack for the Sony Ericsson W800i. I’ve found that having an FM radio built-in to your phone can be fun. Hell, other than trying to take out the Memory Stick, there’s little about the Walkman that isn’t fun. Still, I was having a bit of ROKR envy when I realized that the answer is there, plain as day. I proceeded to tune the radio in the phone to my iTrip (the FM transmitter for the iPod) station, and bingo - all 20GB of my iPod tracks were ready to be played on the W800i. I must have sat there slackjawed for a minute or two as I marvelled at the little surprise. Sure, it’s a hack, and not the same as the real thing, but the phone does cut off the radio when a call comes in. It won’t pause the song, obviously, but otherwise, the functionality is just about the same. The quality is also not as good as a native MP3 player, but it’s more than tolerable - especially knowing that I am not limited to 100 songs.

It’s pretty clear now that the ROKR is a still-born platform. Sadly, it’s still going to sell, because people just don’t realize that there are better, less crippled options available.

but whats the point if you still have to carry your ipod with you? if there is a way to leave your ipod in 1 place, keep your phone with you and still have access to your 20gb music collection then i would be amazed. but why keep your ipod in your pocket, drain the battery on your phone, and listen to poor quality music when you could just use the ipod. if you do figure out a way to be able to leave your ipod in 1 place then please tell!

I dont understand, if you have your ipod, itrip, and w800 on you, why would you want to play it out of the phone using the radio when you can just use the ipod, since its on you already???

The point is that the phone automatically mutes the radio to pick up a call, then resumes when the call is over.  It doesn’t pause the iPod like it does with the built-in MP3 player, but that’s fairly minor.

Anyway, you can keep the iPod in your backpack or something, and use one set of headphones to use both your iPod and your phone, and not have to take off your headphones to answer a call or something.

No, it’s not the same as having the iPod built-in, but quite frankly, the ROKR isn’t the same as having an iPod built-in either, save for support for protected music purchased through iTunes.

Well this can be done with any audio system that have an audio output. All you need is just an FM transmitter, the same that some use to send audio/video from their VCRs or DVDs players to other rooms. More funny would be to use an FM wireless microphone…all you have to do is just tune the frecuency.

It’s just a modder’s/hacker’s fantasy I guess. Maybe as it is, it won’t be very convenient to hear it from the w800, but there are times in which this kind of findings lead to others.

Hi just wondering if u can use the iTrip on a phone to transmit the songs so it can be played on the stereo… cheers

I replaced my rokr with a k750, flashed it to w800, bought a 2 gig card, synched it with itunes with mass storage synchronizer and it is perfect!!
