iOS 9 Will Temporarily Delete Apps to Make Room for Updates

Ever been forced to delete a bunch of photos and apps just to install an iOS update? It's a common gripe — especially for those with 16GB iPhones and iPads.

But fortunately, Apple has thought up a solution to this issue. Developers testing out the second beta of Apple's iOS 9, released this week, have discovered a handy feature, which will help users install operating system updates even when they don't have enough free space on their phone.

As you can see from the photo above, if you try to download the software update but don't have enough space, Apple will temporarily delete your apps to make room. But have no fear — your apps won't be gone for good. Apple will automatically replace all the apps it deletes after the update is complete.

Apple will, of course, only offer you this option if you don't have enough room for the update, and you can opt to either allow the app deletion to happen or cancel the download.

Meanwhile, iOS 9 itself should be a much smaller download than previous versions of the mobile operating system. While its predecessor iOS 8 was 4.58GB, iOS 9, comes in at just 1.3GB, which should make it a lot easier to install the update

iOS 9 is slated to arrive for everyone this fall as a free upgrade, likely alongside new iPhones. Among the new features arriving in iOS 9 is Intelligence, or Apple's version of Google Now, which aims to provide you with information right when you need it, like music for a morning run or an audiobook when you get into your car. Those with newer iPads can also look forward to one long-awaited feature — split-screen multi-tasking, which will let you use two apps at the same time.
