Google planning to release AirPlay alternative

Google AirPlay alternative

Rumor has it that Google is about to take on Apple's AirPlay with an open version of its own. So, it appears that DNLA and Miracast functionality is not enough for the Mountain View web search giant. No wonder, as both features are somewhat of a bag of hurt and have received lackluster reviews.

Google will attempt to get other venders to adopt its open streaming alternative and, perhaps, have the same huge success that AirPlay is having with customers. Apple has had vendors like Denon, Panasonic, JBL, Pioneer, Philips, Yamaha, Logitiech, iHome and Bower & Wilkins, to name a few, that have integrated AirPlay functionality into consumer products.

Previously, Google attempted to make its own streaming hardware, the Nexus Q, with audio streaming functionality. However, from the start, the device was criticized for being too expensive and compounded with limited features compared to popular streaming solutions like the Apple TV, Roku, and Boxee that have video on-demand streaming. Thus, Google recently added an AirPlay-esque feature to YouTube on Google TV. Speaking of Google TV, that hasn't taken off either despite bold claims by former CEO, Eric Schmidt, that most TVs sold will have Google TV integration in 6 months. The one year anniversary to the prediction is nearing. So, in other words, these initiatives will need a lot more attention than simple rhetoric. Our advice is to focus on price and make sure that it's fully baked before announcing anything.
